Chapter 7 - The Broken Harbor

"We have forty-five minutes before Lily’s heart rate collapses again," Julian said, checking the child’s pulse as she lay semi-conscious on the tasting table. "The naloxone is wearing off. We have to get her to a hospital, Arthur."
Arthur lifted Lily into his arms, wrapping his jacket around her small, shuddering frame. "The main gates are blocked. What about the sea access?"
"The boathouse," Vance said, eyes lighting up. "The private launch. We take the coastline down to the Coast Guard station at Sandy Hook. From there, military medevac to Manhattan."
"Move," Arthur ordered.
They navigated the service tunnels beneath the manor, emerging through the stone sea-wall entrance that opened onto the estate’s private marina. The Atlantic surf roared against the jagged granite rocks, spraying salt mist into the midnight air.
At the end of the private pier, Arthur's ninety-foot customized performance yacht, *The Clara*, bobbed against the swells.
Suddenly, a figure stepped out from the shadow of the boathouse.
It was Evelyn.
She was still wearing the torn, drenched champagne gown, her bare feet bleeding from the oyster shells on the dock. Her face was twisted into a grotesque mask of hysterical hatred. In her trembling right hand, she gripped a heavy flare gun taken from the emergency maritime locker.
"You're not leaving, Arthur!" she shrieked over the crashing waves. "You destroyed me! You humiliated me in front of everyone! Do you know what they’ll do to me if this fails?! The cartel will flay me alive!"
"Get out of the way, Evelyn," Arthur said, shielding Lily with his body. "My daughter is dying."
"Let her die!" Evelyn screamed, raising the flare gun, pointing the heavy orange muzzle directly at Arthur's chest. "She ruined everything! If she hadn't tripped on my dress, if she hadn't cried out, I would have had the trust! I would have been safe! You owe me that life!"
"You're pathetic," Arthur said softly, his voice cutting through the wind. "You came into my home, kissed my daughter goodnight, slept in Clara’s bed, and all the while you were waiting for the day to bury us both."
"I did what I had to do to survive!" Evelyn sobbed, her finger tightening on the heavy trigger. "David promised me twenty million! He promised me freedom!"
"David is unconscious in the cellar, Evelyn," Julian Vance said, stepping slowly from the flank, his weapon raised with absolute precision. "The syndicate has already written you off. Look at your phone. If you still have it, check the accounts."
Evelyn's eyes flickered with wild paranoia. "You're lying!"
"Morris left for Teterboro an hour ago without you," Vance continued, his voice cold and devoid of pity. "You were the designated fall girl the moment the silicone dropped. If Arthur died tonight, the police would have arrested you for his murder while David took the company through the offshore trusts. You were never his partner, Evelyn. You were his meat shield."
A horrified silence fell between them, broken only by the violent crash of the ocean waves against the wooden pilings. Evelyn looked down at her bare, bloody feet, then at the flare gun in her shaking hand. The realization hit her like a tidal wave: she had traded her soul for a phantom fortune, manipulated by the very men she thought she was commanding.
With a broken wail, Evelyn lowered the gun. She collapsed onto her knees on the wet dock, burying her face in her hands, weeping hysterically into the wind.

Arthur didn't give her a second glance. "Julian, secure her to the pier cleat. We’re taking the boat."
