Chapter 8 - The Ledger of Blood

The twin high-performance diesel engines of *The Clara* roared to life, churning the dark waters into white foam as the yacht blasted through the coastal chop toward Sandy Hook.

Inside the pressurized medical cabin of the yacht, Julian Vance worked frantically, administering supplemental oxygen from the emergency tanks to Lily. Arthur sat beside the berth, gripping his daughter's tiny, cold hand against his cheek, praying with every shred of his soul.

"Breathe, Lily. Breathe for Daddy," he pleaded, tears carving clean lines through the sea salt and soot on his face. "Please, Clara... don't take her yet. Don't take my baby."

As if responding to a maternal whisper carried across the dark water, Lily’s chest expanded deeply. Her eyelids fluttered open, revealing clear, hazel eyes—so painfully identical to Clara’s.

"Daddy...?" she whispered through the clear plastic oxygen mask.

"I’m here, sweet girl," Arthur choked out, pressing his forehead against hers. "Daddy’s got you. You're safe now. We’re almost there."

Meanwhile, Vance was working rapidly on David Vance’s encrypted satellite phone, hooked into the yacht’s military-grade satellite uplink.

"Arthur," Vance called out, his voice sharp with professional triumph. "I cracked the local cache on David’s phone. It’s not just cargo manifests. It’s a complete audio recording of Dr. Morris’s private consultations with David from fourteen months ago."

Arthur stood up, kissing Lily’s hair before walking over to the navigation console. "Play it."

Vance hit a key. A cold, clinical voice filled the cabin—the unmistakable baritone of Dr. Gerald Morris:

> *"...the pulmonary fibrotic agent has been administered via her daily inhaler. Her oxygen saturation will drop below eighty-five percent within six weeks. Arthur will suspect nothing; idiopathic fibrosis is notoriously impossible to trace post-mortem without specific tissue biopsies. Once Clara is buried, Arthur will be emotionally crippled. That is when you introduce Evelyn. But David... make sure the girl doesn't suspect. If Lily mentions the taste of the medicine to Arthur, the entire project collapses."*

Arthur felt his blood turn into liquid fire. It was all there. A direct, unequivocal confession of pre-meditated murder, corporate espionage, and conspiracy to commit biological homicide.

"Where is Morris’s plane heading?" Arthur asked, his voice deathly quiet.

"Flight plan filed for Zurich, with a refueling stop in the Azores," Vance replied, tracking a flashing transponder icon on the radar monitor. "Gulfstream IV, tail number N-774V. Currently taxiing at Teterboro Airport. Wheels up in twelve minutes."

Arthur picked up the yacht's emergency maritime radio, switching the frequency to a priority channel reserved for the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Maritime Commission.

"This is Arthur Sterling, Chairman and Chief Executive of Sterling Marine Corporation," Arthur spoke into the mic with the cold authority of an emperor reclaiming his throne. "Emergency patch to Admiral Bradley at Coast Guard District One, and Director Ross at the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Code Alpha-Priority. I have evidence of an active bioterrorism syndicate, international treason, and capital murder on American soil."
