Chapter 8 - The Untouchable Signal

A heavy brass fire poker ripped through the conservatory door, followed by Vivian Whitmore.

Vivian was drenched in rain and masonry dust, her silk dress torn at the shoulder, her eyes bloodshot and feral. In her hand, she no longer held a gun—she held a heavy antique iron cleaver taken from the kitchen racks.

“You called them,” Vivian hissed, her voice cracking with pure madness. “You called the police.”

Ava dropped the receiver, stepping squarely between Vivian and the sofa where Lily lay.

“They’re already at the gate, Vivian,” Ava said, not backing down an inch. “It’s over.”

“It’s not over until twelve o’clock!” Vivian screamed, charging forward with the cleaver raised. “If you’re dead before midnight, the trust defaults to Richard! I will control every cent! I will bury you with your mother!”

Ava didn't retreat. As Vivian lunged, Ava grabbed a heavy bronze floor lamp from the corner and swung it horizontally like a staff.

The heavy base struck Vivian across the ribs with a sickening crunch.

Vivian gasped, stumbling back into a display of glass terrariums that shattered around her in a cascading roar of soil and broken crystal. The cleaver clattered onto the parquet floor.

Vivian rolled over, clutching her side, coughing violently. Through the shattered conservatory windows, the sudden wail of emergency sirens cut through the roar of the thunder.

Red and blue light reflected off the driving rain in the driveway outside.

Two county sheriff cruisers and an armored tactical vehicle crashed straight through the estate’s wrought-iron gates, their tires tearing across the manicured lawns.

Vivian scrambled to her feet, her face pale with horror as the searchlights from the police vehicles swept across the glass conservatory, pinning her in a brilliant cage of white light.

“Drop your weapon! Put your hands on your head!” a voice boomed through an external loudspeaker.

Vivian looked at the police, then down at the iron cleaver on the floor, and finally at Ava.

Her expression shifted from murderous rage to a twisted, desperate calculation. In a fraction of a second, Vivian tore at her own collar, ripped her dress further, and fell to her knees, sobbing theatrically toward the shattered window.

“Help me!” Vivian wailed toward the approaching officers. “She went crazy! Ava had a psychotic break—she tried to drown Lily, and she attacked me! Look what she did to my house!”

Ava stood completely still in the center of the ruined room. She didn't shout. She didn't cry.

From the shadow of the interior doorway, Marcus emerged, his face grim, his shotgun broken open and slung harmlessly over his shoulder. Behind him walked two EMTs carrying trauma jump-kits.

And beside Marcus stood Detective Ramirez—the lead investigator who had suspected foul play in Grace’s death two years ago, but had been stonewalled by Richard’s lawyers.

Vivian crawled toward Ramirez, tears streaming down her makeup-smeared cheeks. “Detective! Thank God! Ava needs to be restrained—she’s dangerous, she—”

Ava calmly reached into her pocket.

She pulled out the digital recorder, tapped the external speaker button, and set the volume to maximum.

Vivian’s own voice blasted through the shattered room, echoing off the glass and reaching every officer standing in the rain:

*“...I didn't want to waste a bullet on a toddler. A wet pool deck, a tragic slip, an older sister who panicked and locked the emergency doors in a frenzy… it was poetic. But now? Now the police will find Marcus broke in, killed you both, and I was forced to defend myself…”*

The voice on the recording paused, followed by Vivian’s chilling, crystal-clear boast:

*“Your mother was an obstacle. Just like your father became an obstacle. Richard is a sentimental fool… I will bury you with your mother.”*

The conservatory fell dead silent, save for the rhythmic drumming of rain on broken glass.

Vivian froze on her knees. The color drained from her skin until she looked like a corpse.

Detective Ramirez looked down at her with pure disgust. He unclipped his handcuffs from his utility belt.

“Vivienne Vane-Coutts,” Ramirez said, his voice dropping like an anvil. “You are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and the homicide of Grace Whitmore.”
