Chapter 9 - The Grand Staircase Showdown

As two sheriff's deputies hauled Vivian to her feet, wrenching her arms behind her back with cold efficiency, a sudden commotion broke out at the front entrance of the mansion.

The front double doors banged open.

Supported by a private ambulance driver and clutching an IV pole, Richard Whitmore stumbled into the grand foyer.

He was emaciated, wearing hospital scrubs beneath a heavy wool overcoat, his face pale and sunken from months of chemical poisoning. But his eyes—for the first time in two years—were completely clear.

“Ava?” his voice cracked, echoing down the high marble corridor. “Lily?!”

Ava stepped out of the conservatory into the foyer. When Richard saw her—bruised, covered in brick dust, soaking wet, with Lily wrapped securely in the blanket in her arms—the billionaire dropped to his knees, his hands trembling violently as sobs wracked his frail body.

“Richard!” Vivian screamed from the grip of the deputies, struggling against the steel cuffs. “Richard, darling, tell them! Tell them this is a conspiracy! Ava manipulated the audio—she wants our money! Richard, look at me!”

Richard slowly raised his head. He looked at the woman he had married, the woman who had replaced Grace’s portrait in the gallery, the woman who had lovingly poured his tea every morning while his mind turned to ash.

“The hospital doctors ran a full toxicological screen three hours ago, Vivian,” Richard whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying blend of sorrow and fury. “Marcus called the hospital director before he came here. They found thirty milligrams of thallium in my bloodstream. And the Swiss authorities just faxed a red notice to the state police.”

Vivian’s jaw dropped. The last remnants of her aristocratic mask shattered, leaving behind only the hollow, vicious glare of a cornered predator.

“You pathetic coward,” Vivian hissed, spitting at Richard’s feet as the deputies dragged her toward the door. “You never deserved Grace, and you never deserved that empire! You were too weak to hold it! I should have finished you six months ago!”

“Take her out of my sight,” Richard said softly, turning his face away.

As the deputies hauled Vivian out into the storm, the mansion’s grandfather clock in the corner began to chime.

*One. Two. Three. Four…*

Ava stood on the marble floor, watching the clock hands align at the top of the dial.

*Nine. Ten. Eleven. Twelve.*

**12:00 AM. OCTOBER 24.**

A sudden calm settled over the room. The air felt lighter, as if a long-held breath had finally been released.

The paramedic gently stepped forward, placing a warm hand on Ava’s shoulder. “Miss Whitmore, we need to take Lily now. Her oxygen saturation is climbing, but she needs the pediatric ICU for observation.”

Ava looked down at Lily. The toddler’s eyes were open, her color returning to a soft pink as the oxygen did its work.

“Can I ride with her?” Ava asked, her voice cracking for the first time.

May you like

The paramedic smiled warmly. “There’s a seat right beside her, kid. You saved her life tonight.”
