Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN BESIDE THE WATERThe Vance estate looked beautiful enough to hide a murder.

At 11:47 p.m., the mansion stood almost completely silent beneath a moonless California sky.

Golden light spilled through the tall French doors and stretched across the limestone terrace.

Beyond them, the swimming pool glowed an unnatural turquoise blue.

The water was perfectly still.

Too still.

At the edge of the pool stood Victoria Ashford.

Thirty-two.

Beautiful.

Elegant.

And completely alone.

Her emerald satin gown shimmered whenever the water moved beneath the lights.

Diamond earrings caught tiny flashes of blue against her neck.

One hand rested casually on the handle of a dark gray stroller.

Inside it slept six-month-old Leo Vance.

The only son of Marcus Vance.

And heir to everything his father owned.

Leo shifted beneath his white cotton blanket.

A tiny sound escaped him.

Victoria looked down.

For several seconds, there was nothing unusual in her expression.

She almost looked maternal.

Then she slowly raised her eyes toward the mansion.

The French doors remained empty.

No servants.

No Marcus.

No security guards.

No witnesses.

Victoria checked her watch.

11:48.

Her fingers tightened around the stroller handle.

Leo stirred again.

This time, his eyes opened.

The baby stared upward at Victoria with the innocent confusion of a child who had no idea that adults could hate him.

Victoria stared back.

Something changed in her face.

The softness disappeared.

Her jaw tightened.

Her eyes became cold.

“You should never have been born,” she whispered.

Leo made a small sound.

Victoria looked toward the mansion again.

Still empty.

But she didn't see the movement behind the hedge.

She didn't notice the faint red light hidden between two branches.

Blink.

Darkness.

Blink.

Recording.

Victoria released the stroller brake.

Click.

The tiny sound seemed deafening in the silent night.

The stroller moved an inch.

Then stopped.

Victoria placed two fingers against the handle.

She hesitated.

Not because she had changed her mind.

Because she was listening.

Somewhere inside the mansion, a door closed.

Victoria froze.

Footsteps followed.

She waited.

They faded.

Her shoulders relaxed.

Then she smiled.

It wasn't a nervous smile.

It wasn't the smile of someone about to make a mistake.

It was the smile of someone who believed she was about to solve a problem.

Forever.

“Goodbye, Leo.”

She pushed.

The stroller began rolling.

Slowly at first.

Then faster.

One wheel reached the limestone edge.

Leo woke fully.

He began to cry.

The front wheels dropped.

Victoria didn't move.

The stroller tipped violently forward.

For one horrible second, the baby seemed suspended between the terrace and the water.

Then—

SPLASH.

The stroller disappeared into the pool.

Leo's cry vanished instantly.

Bubbles exploded beneath the turquoise surface.

Victoria remained standing at the edge.

She could have screamed.

She could have reached down.

She could have jumped.

She did none of those things.

She simply watched.

Five seconds passed.

Ten.

The stroller sank deeper.

Victoria exhaled slowly.

Then—

“LEO!”

The scream came from behind her.

Victoria spun around.

Elena Ramirez was running across the terrace.

The young maid's face had gone white.

She didn't ask what happened.

She didn't stop.

She didn't remove her shoes.

She ran straight past Victoria.

And jumped.

Her body struck the water hard.

Victoria stumbled backward.

For the first time that night, real fear appeared in her eyes.

Not because Leo might die.

Because someone had arrived in time to save him.

Beneath the surface, Elena disappeared into the darkness.

Victoria stared at the water.

Then toward the mansion.

Then back at the pool.

Her mind began moving.

Calculating.

Changing the plan.

Because Leo was no longer her biggest problem.

Elena was.

May you like

And somewhere inside the hedge—

the red light blinked again.
