Chapter 5 - THE NAME IN THE TRUSTDaniel wrapped Noah in his jacket.

“Stay behind me.”
Smoke filled the corridor.
Emily held Margaret's recorder and the trust documents beneath her coat.
The main exit was blocked.
Flames climbed the wall.
Daniel kicked open the emergency stairwell.
They escaped through the rear of the building moments before part of the storage corridor collapsed.
Firefighters arrived.
Police followed.
Daniel finally called Detective Marcus Reed.
Marcus arrived forty minutes later.
He studied Daniel's photographs.
The hidden cameras.
Margaret's recorder.
The trust documents.
Then he looked at Noah sleeping in Emily's arms.
“Who benefits if something happens to him?”
“No one,” Emily said.
Marcus opened the trust.
“Actually…”
His finger followed several paragraphs.
“If Noah dies before adulthood, temporary control transfers to Emily.”
Emily nodded.
“And if something happens to Emily?”
Marcus continued reading.
Then stopped.
His expression changed.
Daniel noticed.
“What?”
Marcus turned the document.
There was a backup trustee administrator.
HELEN WARD.
Emily stared.
“No.”
Daniel read it again.
Helen Ward.
“No.”
Emily stood.
“My mother would never do that.”
Marcus nodded slowly.
“Then perhaps she didn't.”
“Forgery?”
“Maybe.”
But Helen alone couldn't explain everything.
Someone had created financial records.
Surveillance systems.
Legal documents.
And a network sophisticated enough to track Daniel for years.
The next morning, police quietly placed surveillance equipment around the Carter home.
Helen was not informed.
She arrived at exactly 8:03.
Smiling.
Calm.
Carrying Noah's favorite stuffed elephant.
Daniel watched from the study.
Detective Reed listened from a vehicle outside.
Helen approached Emily.
“You look tired.”
Emily forced a smile.
Helen touched her bruised cheek.
“You should be more careful.”
Emily pulled away.
Then Helen leaned close.
Her voice dropped.
“You shouldn't have gone to the storage unit.”
Emily froze.
Daniel's hand tightened.
Detective Reed heard every word.
They finally had proof Helen knew about the unit.
Reed prepared to enter.
Then Helen suddenly looked directly toward the hidden police camera.
A strange smile appeared.
She knew.
She stared into the lens.
Then spoke slowly.
“Daniel…”
Daniel froze.
“…before you blame me…”
Helen paused.
“…you should ask your business partner why he's been paying me.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
His business partner.
Michael Grant.
Daniel's best friend for twenty years.
The godfather of Noah.

Helen smiled at the camera.
“He knows exactly why that baby matters.”
