Chapter 14 - The Manor Under Siege

The iron gates of Hale Manor hung twisted and shredded on their hinges.

When Rebecca and Vance’s convoy crested the winding private drive twenty minutes later, the scene was an absolute nightmare of tactical violence. Two black-and-white federal response cruisers had been rammed off the asphalt, their front ends crushed like tin cans. Glass and smoking flare casings littered the manicured lawn.

"Hold fire," Vance ordered over the tactical comms. "Thermal sweep on the main house."

The front passenger turned, holding up a ruggedized tablet. "Sir, I’ve got multiple heat signatures inside the east wing. Four tangos moving through the ballroom. Two on the second-floor mezzanine. No federal survivor beacons active."

"They cleared the house in under ten minutes," Vance muttered, his jaw clenching. "Sovereign Vanguard."

"Look at the south terrace," Rebecca pointed through the rain-streaked windshield.

Parked near the conservatory was a heavily armored transport van with its rear doors flung wide. Two operators in full combat gear were dragging a man by his arms across the wet flagstones.

It was Thomas Hale.

Even in the darkness, Rebecca recognized the pathetic slump of his shoulders. His bespoke charcoal suit was torn, drenched in mud, and his face was smeared with dark crimson. The man who had once stood at the head of a fifty-seat banquet table, commanding politicians and CEOs with an arrogant flick of his wrist, was being dragged like a carcass toward the cellar bulkhead.

"They're forcing him to open the sub-level," Rebecca said, unbuckling her seatbelt.

"Rebecca, wait," Vance reached across, gripping her arm with iron authority. "We have four operators. They have at least a dozen heavily armed mercenaries with night-vision superiority. We wait for tactical backup from the Quantico field office. Ten minutes."

"In ten minutes, they breach the containment vault," Rebecca replied, tearing her arm free with trained leverage. "And if they touch the primary seal of the Iron Veil storage cell without the thermal stabilizer, the chemical compound inside will vaporize. It contains concentrated dimethyl sulfoxide and neurotoxins. It won't just kill them—it will contaminate the entire county aquifer."

Vance’s eyes widened. "Samuel built a scorched-earth fail-safe?"

"Samuel was an idealist, but he wasn't an idiot," Rebecca said, pulling a compact tactical flashlight from her vest pocket. "He knew what would happen if someone tried to take the research with a plasma torch. I know the override bypass. Thomas doesn't."

She looked directly into Vance’s eyes, the commander superseding the civilian completely.

"You take the front entrance. Draw their perimeter team into an engagement on the main floor. Make enough noise to make them think the federal cavalry has arrived. I take the old root cellar conduit behind the greenhouse. I drop directly into the vault behind them."

Vance stared at her for two long seconds. He knew the risk. If her timing was off by five seconds, she would walk into the crosshairs of six professional killers with zero backup.

"Five minutes," Vance said, his voice hard as iron. "If I don't hear your extraction signal on channel four in five minutes, I call in an airstrike on the foundation."

"Understood," Rebecca said.

She pushed the door open, dropped low into the wet grass, and vanished into the shadows of the estate she had once called home.
