Chapter 16 - The Shield of Flesh

The double-tap was instantaneous.

The first shot took the man with the plasma torch through the base of the neck; the second drilled through his center mass as he collapsed backward, dropping the sparking torch against the concrete with a hiss.

The second contractor spun, bringing his submachine gun up, but Rebecca was already moving, sliding behind a structural support column as a burst of 9mm rounds chewed through the antique brickwork, sending red dust and stone chips blindingly into the air.

"Contact! We have an armed escort inside the—"

Rebecca leaned out from the waist, utilizing the low angle, and fired twice through the blinding cloud of dust. The bullets found their mark. The second mercenary collapsed with a wet gurgle, his weapon clattering across the floor.

Silence slammed back down over the corridor, broken only by the hiss of the dying plasma torch and Thomas Hale’s ragged, terrified sobbing.

"Drop the knife," Rebecca said, her voice freezing the humid underground air.

Her weapon was locked onto the chest of the third man—the commander.

He hadn't panicked. He stood slowly, keeping Thomas between himself and Rebecca’s line of fire, his knife resting just beneath Thomas’s jugular. His gray eyes were dead, calculating, devoid of fear.

"Colonel Hale," the man said smoothly, his accent distinctly Eastern European. "We were hoping you would join the party."

"Let him go," Rebecca said, her stance anchored, arms steady as steel.

"Why should I?" the mercenary chuckled softly, his blade nicking the skin of Thomas’s throat. A single bead of bright red blood welled up and trickled down the old man’s collar. "This man sold you out before you even graduated from West Point. He forged your mother’s will. He tried to have your military pension stripped. He hates you, Colonel. Why die for a man who spent his entire life trying to erase you?"

On the floor, Thomas lifted his battered, swollen face. Through blackened, half-closed eyes, he looked up at Rebecca.

There was no arrogance left in him. No sneer. No cold, patrician disdain. There was only the raw, naked animal realization of who had come to save him.

"Re... Rebecca..." Thomas choked out, blood bubbling at the corner of his lips. "Run... get out... they don't... they don't want the money..."

"Shut up, old man," the mercenary hissed, tightening his grip. He looked back at Rebecca. "The diode. Give me the diode from your insignia, and I leave you both breathing. Refuse, and his throat opens right now."

Rebecca didn't lower her weapon by a fraction of an inch.

"You don't understand who you're dealing with," Rebecca said calmly.

"I know exactly who you are. A decorated combat surgeon. An officer bound by oaths to preserve life."

"You're right," Rebecca said softly. "I took an oath to preserve life."

Her finger rested firmly on the trigger.

"But when I was commanding trauma teams under mortar fire in Fallujah, I learned something that wasn't in the medical manuals."

The mercenary’s brow furrowed slightly, sensing a shift in the air.

"What's that?" he asked.

"You can't treat the wound," Rebecca whispered, "until you destroy the infection."

Above them, the ceiling suddenly buckled.

A deafening detonation tore through the floorboards directly over their heads—Vance’s breach team executing an explosive vertical entry. Chunks of plaster and heavy oak beams crashed downward in a blinding shower of fire and debris.

The mercenary flinched for a fraction of a second, his eyes flicking instinctively upward toward the ceiling.

It was all the opening Rebecca needed.
