Chapter 8 - THE VIDEO THAT WOULD NOT DISAPPEARA year after the party, the internet remembered.

An account reposted the video.

This time, Lily was older.

Stronger.

But not untouched.

She came home from school furious.

Daniel found her in the kitchen.

“They posted it again.”

His stomach dropped.

“Who told you?”

“Someone at school.”

He sat beside her.

“Do you want me to call the principal?”

“No.”

“Do you want to stay home tomorrow?”

“No.”

Daniel waited.

“What do you want?”

Lily stared at the table.

“I want people to stop seeing me as that girl.”

Daniel understood.

The girl with the chain.

The girl crying.

The girl strangers had decided they knew.

“What do you want them to see?”

Lily looked at him.

“Me.”

That weekend, she made a decision.

Not an interview.

Not a public statement about Vanessa.

Something simpler.

At the school art fair, Lily displayed her yellow-door painting.

Her title was:

AFTER.

Underneath, she wrote one sentence.

You are not the worst thing that happened to you.

Daniel stood across the room watching people stop.

Read.

Move on.

No spectacle.

No cameras shoved into her face.

Just art.

Later, a teacher asked Lily if she wanted to submit the painting to a regional youth exhibition.

She said yes.

Three months later, it won.

Daniel framed the certificate.

Lily rolled her eyes.

“Dad.”

“What?”

“It’s one certificate.”

“It’s going on the wall.”

“Which wall?”

“All of them.”

She laughed.

The video still existed.

It probably always would.

But it no longer owned the only version of Lily available to the world.

She was creating new images.

May you like

New memories.

New proof.
