Chapter 9 - THE LETTERTwo years after the party, a letter arrived.

No return address.
Daniel recognized the handwriting on the envelope.
Vanessa.
His first instinct was to throw it away.
Instead, he called Rebecca.
“Can she send this?”
“Technically, if the order prohibits direct contact with Lily, sending it to you may not violate the terms depending on the exact wording.”
Daniel looked at the envelope.
“Should I open it?”
“That’s up to you.”
He hated that answer.
Eventually, he opened it alone.
Vanessa wrote six pages.
Some apologies.
Some excuses.
Some descriptions of her own childhood.
Some blame directed at Eleanor.
Some admissions.
Some self-pity.
Daniel read every word.
Then he put the letter down.
Nothing changed.
That surprised him.
For years, he imagined an apology might matter.
It did not.
Explanation was not restoration.
Remorse did not erase consequences.
That evening, Lily noticed the envelope.
“From her?”
Daniel did not lie.
“Yes.”
“What does she want?”
“To apologize.”
Lily looked uncomfortable.
“Do I have to read it?”
“No.”
“Do I have to forgive her?”
“No.”
“Dr. Hart says forgiveness is complicated.”
“She’s right.”
Lily looked at the fire.
“What do you think?”
Daniel considered.
“I think you don’t owe anyone access to you just because they’re sorry.”
Lily nodded.
“Did you forgive her?”
Daniel smiled sadly.
“I stopped letting anger make decisions for me.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“It’s the best one I have.”
Lily accepted that.
The letter stayed in a locked file.
Unread by her.
Not destroyed.
May you like
Not honored.
Just powerless.
