Chapter 12 - The Devil’s Second Daughter

The kitchen of the farmhouse looked like a war room under military siege.

It was 5:00 AM. Outside, heavy autumn rain lashed against the French doors, turning the garden into a sea of churned mud. Khloe sat at the rustic pine island, clutching Victoria to her chest so tightly the baby squirmed with mild irritation. Khloe’s eyes were bloodshot, hollowed out by adrenaline and sheer terror, staring fixedly at the crimson Louboutin pump sitting in the center of the table.

The shoe had been retrieved from the porch steps. It was identical to the one that had broken Khloe’s ribs and severed her placenta nine months ago. But this one wasn't old. The leather smelled fresh, expensive, and faintly of embalming fluid.

Elena sat opposite Khloe, her aged hands gripping a chipped mug of black tea. Her knuckles were white. Her weathered face, usually radiating a calm, grandmotherly resilience, looked completely drained of life. She stared at the bloody stiletto as if it were a venomous snake coiled to strike.

"You know whose shoe that is, don't you, Elena?" I demanded, pacing the length of the slate floor. My tactical vest was strapped tight over my sweater, my holster unclipped. "Don't lie to me. Isabella didn't break out of maximum security, carve her own tendons, and walk into my nursery. She was murdered in her cell. And whoever killed her brought that shoe here."

Elena didn't look up. Her voice was barely a rasp. "Arthur wasn't a man who left loose ends, Julian. You thought Isabella was his only vanity project? You thought a billionaire sociopath who engineered his own wife’s death would place all his chips on one manicured trophy wife?"

Khloe gasped, her fingers digging into the hem of Victoria’s onesie. "What are you saying, Elena? Who did Arthur bring into this family?"

"Thirty years ago," Elena began, her voice trembling with an old, radioactive pain, "before your father drove me into the shadows, before he hired Isabella to play the role of the devoted corporate socialite... there was another woman. A German chemist named Margaret Richter. Arthur funded her private research facilities in Zurich under the umbrella of Vance Continental. She didn't just give Arthur patents, Julian. She gave him a child."

The room seemed to shrink. The air grew impossibly thin.

"A sister?" I whispered, my voice dripping with revulsion. "I have a sister?"

"A half-sister," Elena corrected, finally raising her eyes. They were brimming with tears of bitter remorse. "Her name is Clarissa. But Arthur never registered her birth certificate in the United States. He considered her his 'contingency plan.' When Isabella proved to be vain, reckless, and easily manipulated, Arthur channeled the dark-budget capital of the Vance trust into Clarissa’s offshore clinical syndicates. Clarissa wasn't raised in high society. She was raised in cleanrooms, boardrooms, and black-market bio-logistics."

"Why did Isabella attack Khloe then?" Khloe’s voice was fierce, edged with rising hysteria. "Isabella told me she was doing it to secure the Vance inheritance for herself! She said if my baby died, the trust remained in her control!"

"Because Isabella was an idiot!" Elena slammed her palm onto the pine table, rattling the teacup. "Isabella was bankrupt! The board was removing her! She thought getting rid of your child would trigger the succession clause and give her liquid access. She never knew that Arthur’s master trust had a fail-safe execution protocol. If Isabella died in prison... or failed to secure the primary lineage within one calendar year of Arthur's death... every single cent, every offshore patent, every real estate holding automatically reverted to Margaret Richter’s bloodline."

Elena pointed a trembling, calloused finger directly at the bloody shoe on the table.

"Clarissa didn't kill Isabella out of revenge, Julian. She killed Isabella because the one-year clock runs out in forty-eight hours. And under the terms of Arthur’s secret codicil... if Victoria lives past her first birthday, Clarissa gets nothing."
