Chapter 17 - The Blood Ledger

"Julian, wait! Look at the table!" Elena shouted, her voice cutting through the ringing in my ears like a siren.
I was already turning toward the vault exit, my submachine gun gripped so tightly my fingers were turning blue, ready to sprint to our vehicle and tear through Manhattan at two hundred miles an hour.
"There's no time, Elena!" I snarled, blinded by rage and terror. "They have Victoria! They have Khloe!"
"Look at the ledger beneath the monitor!" Sarah Chen yelled, lunging toward the examination table.
Beneath the satellite receiver sat a heavy, water-damaged leather binder stamped with the official insignia of the Swiss Federal Health Office, dated 1994. Sarah’s fingers tore through the brittle, yellowed pages, scanning the German clinical shorthand with frantic, trained speed.
"Julian... stop," Sarah gasped, her eyes going wide with an expression that wasn't panic—it was profound, paralyzing shock. "Look at this. Look at the genetic lineage mapping."
"I don't care about the lineage!" I screamed, lunging to grab Sarah's arm to drag her out of the room.
"You have to care, Julian!" Sarah shoved the open ledger into my chest. "Clarissa isn't Arthur’s daughter!"
The words hit me like a physical blow. I stopped dead in my tracks.
"What?"
"Clarissa Richter was never Arthur’s child," Sarah said, pointing a trembling finger at the DNA hybridization tables documented by my father’s own handwriting. "Margaret Richter was working for Arthur, yes. But Clarissa was an adopted clinical subject—an infant born to an undocumented migrant worker in Vienna who possessed the identical Rh-null phenotype. Arthur faked her parentage to legally bind her into the Swiss trust covenants!"
"Why would he do that?" I breathed, my mind spinning into a sickening freefall.
Elena collapsed against the vault door, her face buried in her hands. "Because Arthur was sterile, Julian."
The silence that followed was suffocating. The hum of the fluorescent tube sounded deafening.
"What did you just say?" I whispered, turning slowly toward the woman who claimed to be my biological mother.
Elena looked up. Her eyes were sunken, swimming with an ocean of thirty-year-old guilt.
"Arthur Vance couldn't father children," Elena wept, her voice breaking into ragged, pathetic sobs. "He had mumps as an adolescent. He was completely infertile. When he realized he could never produce an heir with the rare immunological blood he needed to control the synthetic clotting monopoly... he used artificial insemination. He bought high-grade donor genetic profiles from underground European banks."
I stared at her, feeling as though the ground beneath my feet had dissolved into open air.
"Then who am I, Elena?" My voice was barely audible. "Who is my father?"
"You don't have a Vance bloodline, Julian," Elena choked out. "None of us do. Arthur engineered all of this. You, Clarissa, the entire inheritance war... it’s a fiction. The Vance Continental Trust’s bloodline clause is a complete biological fraud. And if Clarissa extracts Victoria’s marrow under the belief that she’s harvesting a family genetic match... the incompatible enzymes will cause Victoria’s immune system to trigger a fatal, irreversible anaphylactic shock within ninety seconds."
Clarissa didn't just plan to harvest my daughter.
