Daniel wrapped a blanket around Rachel while someone called police.
Lily would not let go of her.
Vanessa kept insisting there had been a misunderstanding.
Nobody listened.
Rachel said she had returned to the mansion that afternoon.
She had not lived overseas.
She had been in Arizona.
In a residential trauma-recovery program.
After a breakdown during the custody dispute, she had agreed to treatment.
Daniel knew that part.
What he did not know was that Rachel had finished the program three months earlier.
Every message he received afterward claiming she wanted no contact had been false.
Rachel had emailed.
Called.
Sent certified letters.
None reached him.
Vanessa had intercepted enough of them to make silence look intentional.
When Rachel finally came to the house in person, Vanessa let her inside.
