Chapter 6 - The Eye in the Ceiling

A collective, horrified murmur swept through the two hundred guests. Socialites covered their mouths; prominent investors stepped back into the shadows, mentally calculating how quickly they could sever their business ties with Ashford Capital before the markets opened on Monday.

"N-No," Chloe gasped, shaking her head in frantic denial, her face drained of all color. "No! That's impossible! She’s a nobody! She grew up in a run-down cottage in the Catskills! Daniel told us she had nothing! She doesn't have an inheritance!"

"She grew up on a twelve-thousand-acre private estate in the Adirondacks, Miss Ashford," Julian replied with glacial detachment. "She lived modestly in the city because she believed—foolishly, as it turns out—that your family might value character over capital. She wanted to know if your brother loved her for who she was, rather than the nine hundred million dollars sitting in her primary trust."

Daniel looked like he was about to vomit. He took a staggering step toward me, his hands reaching out into the empty air, trembling violently.

"Elena..." Daniel croaked, his voice cracking with absolute despair. "Elena, you... you never told me. Why didn't you tell me? I’m your husband!"

"I told you I was an architect, Daniel," I said, my voice completely devoid of the warmth I had once carried for him. "I told you I valued truth above all things. I never lied to you about my heart, my morals, or my devotion. You simply assumed that because I didn't boast, I was worthless. And when your family decided to tear me apart to save their own vanity, you handed them the knife."

"Enough of this theater!" Eleanor screeched, her voice cracking as panic completely overtook her reason. She was a cornered animal now, snapping wildly in the dark. "Even if she is your daughter, Mr. Vance, that does not change the law! The Matriarch Sapphire was stolen twenty minutes ago from my daughter's private suite! It is gone! We have the right to search everyone, regardless of their family name! A crime is a crime!"

"Indeed, Mrs. Ashford," Julian said calmly, lifting a single finger. "A crime is a crime. Which is why the New York State Police are standing behind me. And which is why we are going to look at the security monitors right now."

Julian nodded toward the lead technician stationed by the audiovisual booth.

The massive LED screens overhead flickered again. The golden griffin crest vanished, replaced by high-definition, multi-angle surveillance footage timestamped forty-five minutes earlier.

The camera was positioned in the private hallway leading to the bridal suite of the Grand Monarch.

The entire ballroom watched in dead silence as the footage played.

There was no Elena Vance near that suite.

Instead, the screen showed Chloe Ashford, looking nervously over her shoulder, entering the bridal suite alone. Two minutes later, she emerged carrying a small blue velvet box. She walked briskly down the service corridor, stopping near the service elevator.

Waiting for her was a man in an impeccably tailored grey suit—Marcus Vance, my father's senior private investigator, though Chloe clearly hadn't known who he was at the time.

On the screen, Chloe handed the blue velvet box directly to the man, who handed her a black leather envelope in return. The audio from the parabolic hallway mic played with crystalline clarity through the ballroom's surround-sound speakers:

*"Is this the full cash deposit?"* Chloe’s voice echoed across the hall. *"Two hundred thousand? The insurance company will pay out the rest once I claim my brother’s wife stole it at the banquet. Just make sure the stone is across the Canadian border by midnight."*

The footage froze on Chloe’s face, captured in high-definition greed, handing away the family heirloom she had just claimed was ripped from her bare fingers.
