Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

A suffocating gasp tore through the two hundred guests. The high-society facade that Eleanor and Chloe had spent decades cultivating disintegrated into fine dust in less than ten seconds.
"Oh, God," Chloe whispered, her knees buckling beneath her. She collapsed onto the polished marble, her bridal gown pooling around her like dirty snow. Her hands shook uncontrollably as she looked up at the giant screen displaying her treason to the entire city of New York.
Eleanor stood frozen, her eyes wide with unadulterated horror. She looked at her daughter on the floor, then at the screens, then at the circle of their wealthy peers who were now openly sneering at them in disgust.
"Chloe..." Eleanor croaked, her voice trembling. "What... what did you do?"
"You knew, Eleanor," I said, my voice cutting through the heavy silence like cold steel. "Don't pretend you were blind to it. You signed off on the loan defaults last month. You knew the insurance scam was the only way to keep the Ashford name out of the bankruptcy courts before Monday morning. You just needed a scapegoat. And who better than the quiet, penniless girl Daniel brought home?"
Daniel turned toward his sister, his face completely pale, his eyes wild with betrayal.
"You did this?" Daniel screamed, his voice breaking into a sob of sheer humiliation. "You knew she was eight months pregnant! You ripped her clothes in front of two hundred people! You made me... you made me doubt my own wife!"
"You didn't doubt her, Daniel," Julian Vance interjected, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, crushing authority. "You betrayed her. There is a profound difference. A man defends his wife against the world, even when the world stands against her. You handed her purse to the wolves to save your own social standing."
Daniel fell to his knees in front of me, completely heedless of the broken glass and spilled bourbon soaking through his tailored trousers. He reached out, trying to grab the hem of my father's jacket that was wrapped around me, but I took a step back, pulling the wool closer.
"Elena, please," Daniel wept, tears streaming down his face, snot running over his lip. "Elena, I didn't know! I swear to God, I didn't know what Chloe had planned! I was terrified! The family business is failing, my mother was screaming at me every day, I was losing my mind! Please... forgive me. Think of our baby! Think of our daughter!"
"Do not speak of my daughter," I said, looking down at him.
The sight of him on his knees did not bring me joy. It brought me nothing but a profound, hollow pity. For three years, I had thought this man was my shelter from the storms of the world. Now I saw him for what he truly was: a dry leaf blown about by whatever wind blew strongest.
"When your sister lunged at me, you didn't step in front of her," I continued, each word measured, precise, and final. "When your mother stood on my gown and tore it from my body, you didn't cover me. You took the last shred of dignity I had and offered it up as a sacrifice to your family’s pride. You are not a father, Daniel. You are merely Eleanor Ashford’s son. And that is all you will ever be."
The lead police captain stepped forward, his boots clicking heavily against the marble. Behind him, two female officers approached the weeping Chloe Ashford.
"Chloe Ashford," the captain announced, his voice booming through the silent room. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, filing a false felony report, and grand larceny. Stand up and place your hands behind your back."
Chloe wailed, a sound like a wounded animal, as the cold steel handcuffs clicked around her manicured wrists. Eleanor rushed forward, attempting to block the officers.
"Do you know who we are?" Eleanor shrieked, her aristocratic composure completely shattered into madness. "You cannot arrest an Ashford at the Grand Monarch! I will have your badges! I will call the Mayor!"

"You won't be calling anyone, Mrs. Ashford," one of my father’s attorneys stated calmly, stepping forward with a stack of legal documents pulled from his leather briefcase. "Because as of four o'clock this afternoon, Vance Capital has purchased the totality of Ashford Capital’s secondary debt. All twelve notes are in technical default. We have filed for immediate receivership."
