Chapter 6 - The Forensic Ambush

Ten minutes later, the door to ICU Room 402 opened, admitting a man who looked like an unmade bed. Detective Marcus Boyd was in his late forties, wearing a wrinkled brown trench coat over an unironed Oxford shirt, holding a cardboard cup of stale hospital coffee. His hair was thinning, his eyes were heavy with chronic fatigue, but beneath his drooping eyelids burned the sharp, relentless intellect of a bloodhound.

He closed the door behind him, didn't bother offering a polite platitude, and pulled a digital recorder from his trench coat pocket.

“Mrs. Vance,” Boyd said, his voice a gravelly rasp. “Evelyn told me you survived an execution attempt. I’ve been waiting three years for someone to pull the curtain back on Julian Vance’s little kingdom.”

“Detective Boyd,” I said, resting my hands flat over the blanket, keeping my breathing as even as possible to suppress the agony in my side. “I’m not here to give you an emotional story about a broken marriage. I’m here to give you an open-and-shut case of premeditated attempted murder, conspiracy to commit homicide, and multi-jurisdictional corporate embezzlement.”

Boyd pulled a rolling stool next to Evelyn, set his coffee on the windowsill, and hit record on his device. “Start from the moment Selena Cole entered your penthouse on Tuesday.”

For the next twenty minutes, I laid out the sequence of events with cold, mathematical precision. I described Selena’s staged arrival, the superficial scratch on her forearm, my lack of egress from the building, Julian’s refusal to verify the security logs, and the cold-blooded plunge of the kitchen blade.

When I reached the moment of my collapse, I nodded toward Dr. Reed.

Caleb connected the smartwatch to an external Bluetooth speaker he had brought from his office. He pressed play on the 48-minute audio file.

The sterile room filled with the sickening, crystal-clear acoustics of Julian and Selena’s triumph.

*“Julian, wipe the handle of the knife with the dish towel from the island... good. Now, press Valerie’s right fingers against the blade. Just the fingertips, make it look like she dropped it during the struggle.”*

*“God, Selena... look at her eyes. They’re still open.”*

*“Close them, Julian! Don’t look at her! She’s dead! Look at me—look at me! We have forty million dollars waiting in the Grand Cayman account. In six months, we’ll be on a yacht in Monaco and nobody in this miserable city will even remember her name.”*

Detective Boyd’s face remained completely impassive as the audio played, but I watched his right hand slowly clench into a fist so tight that the knuckles turned chalky white.

When the recording reached the frantic, fake 911 call Julian made, Boyd leaned forward and stopped the playback.

“Where is that watch right now?” Boyd asked, his voice dead flat.

“Right here,” Dr. Reed said, pointing to the device resting on the sanitary tray. “Chain of custody has been maintained entirely by me since the patient’s arrival. I will sign a sworn forensic declaration verifying that the internal metadata, timestamp, and geolocation data have not been altered in any way.”

Boyd pulled a pair of nitrile gloves from his pocket, slipped them on, and carefully transferred the watch into a heavy-duty evidence bag he produced from his coat.

“This audio gives me probable cause for an immediate arrest warrant for Julian Vance and Selena Cole,” Boyd said, standing up. “Conspiracy to commit murder in the first degree. Attempted aggravated murder. Tampering with physical evidence.”

“Wait,” Evelyn intervened, holding up a manicured hand. “Julian is holding a live press conference at Vance Capital headquarters in exactly forty-two minutes. If you arrest him in his private apartment, his crisis PR team will spin it as a procedural misunderstanding while he posts bail and slips out of the country on a private charter from Teterboro.”

Boyd paused, a slow, wicked grin spreading across his tired face. “You want me to take him down on live television.”

“I want the entire financial world to watch the handcuffs click around his wrists,” I said, my voice hardening like tempered steel. “I want the investors, the board members, and the media to see Julian Vance exposed for the pathetic, murderous coward he is. And I want Selena Cole arrested in the penthouse before she can pack her designer luggage with my grandmother’s jewelry.”

Boyd checked his watch. “Midtown traffic is a nightmare at 1:20 PM. But if I run my sirens down Second Avenue, I can have three task force cruisers outside Vance Capital’s lobby by 1:50 PM.”

He turned to leave, but paused with his hand on the doorknob. He looked back at me, his eyes softening for a fleeting second.

“Mrs. Vance,” Boyd said gruffly. “I’ve seen a lot of victims survive horrific violence in this city. Most of them break. Most of them spend years hiding in the dark.”

May you like

“I’m not a victim, Detective Boyd,” I replied, looking him straight in the eye. “I’m the surviving partner. And today, I’m closing the account.”
