Chapter 8 - The Live Execution

The television screen displayed the gleaming, marble-clad atrium of Vance Capital’s headquarters at 383 Madison Avenue. A forest of media microphones was clustered around a polished mahogany podium bearing the firm’s golden crest. Behind the podium stood a massive high-definition screen displaying the Vance Capital logo.
A news ticker scrolled across the bottom of the screen: *BREAKING NEWS: VANCE CAPITAL CEO JULIAN VANCE TO ADDRESS DOMESTIC TRAGEDY; EXPECTED TO STEP DOWN TEMPORARILY.*
At precisely 1:58 PM, Julian Vance stepped through the frosted glass double doors of the executive suite and approached the microphones.
He had calculated every detail of his appearance with psychopathic perfection. He wore a muted navy suit with no tie, the top button of his white shirt undone to convey a man undone by grief. His face was pale, his eyes artfully shadowed, carrying an expression of noble, dignified suffering.
He took his place at the podium, placed his hands flat against the mahogany, and bowed his head for five theatrical seconds.
“Members of the press, esteemed partners, and friends,” Julian began, his voice trembling with a masterclass of fabricated vulnerability. “I come before you today with an utterly broken heart. As many of you have heard through rumors and preliminary reports over the last forty-eight hours, our family has suffered an unspeakable, catastrophic tragedy.”
In the ICU room, my heart hammered against my ribs, but my hands remained entirely still. I watched the monster perform.
“My beloved wife, Valerie,” Julian continued, choking back a manufactured sob, “has been privately fighting a severe, deteriorating psychiatric illness over the past year. Despite my best efforts to surround her with the finest medical care, two days ago, Valerie suffered a complete, violent psychotic break inside our home.”
Julian wiped a tear from the corner of his eye. Flashbulbs erupted in a blinding frenzy.
“During this episode,” Julian said, his voice dropping to a somber whisper, “Valerie attacked a dear family friend with a deadly weapon. When I attempted to intervene—when I tried desperately to disarm the woman I love more than life itself—a catastrophic struggle ensued. Valerie sustained life-threatening injuries.”
Julian looked directly into the camera lens—directly into my eyes across the digital divide.
“Valerie remains in critical condition under heavy sedation,” he lied smoothly. “While her prognosis is uncertain, my priority must be her long-term psychiatric rehabilitation and the preservation of our family’s dignity. Therefore, I am announcing an indefinite leave of absence from Vance Capital—”
*“Mr. Vance!”* a voice boomed from the back of the auditorium, cutting through Julian’s speech like a machete.
The cameras swung around frantically.
Detective Marcus Boyd, flanked by six uniformed NYPD officers and four federal agents from the SEC Enforcement Division, marched down the center aisle of the press room.
Julian’s face froze. The manufactured grief vanished instantly, replaced by a flash of cold, cornered panic. “Detective Higgins? What is the meaning of this? This is a private corporate briefing—”
“I’m not Higgins, Mr. Vance,” Boyd announced, his voice echoing off the limestone walls and broadcasting live to three million viewers across the United States. “My name is Detective Marcus Boyd, Manhattan DA’s Task Force. I have an arrest warrant signed by Judge Elena Ramirez of the New York State Supreme Court.”
A collective gasp swept through the room. Journalists scrambled to their feet, cameras zooming in on Boyd as he reached the podium.
“An arrest warrant?” Julian stammered, his dimpled charm curdling into sickening terror. “For what? What are you talking about?”
Boyd pulled a folded legal document from his trench coat and slapped it onto the podium directly over Julian’s prepared speech notes.
“Julian Vance, you are under arrest for Attempted Murder in the First Degree, Conspiracy to Commit Aggravated Homicide, and Tampering with Physical Evidence,” Boyd said clearly into the sea of open microphones.
“This is an outrage!” Julian yelled, backing away from the podium, his voice cracking as the microphones picked up his frantic screech. “My wife is in a coma! She attacked someone! I was defending a guest!”
“Your wife is awake, Julian,” Boyd replied, stepping forward and grabbing Julian’s left wrist with brutal efficiency. “She’s been awake for twenty-four hours. And she handed us your confession.”
“What confession? She’s delusional! She has no proof!”
Boyd twisted Julian’s arm behind his back, forcing the multi-millionaire CEO forward over the podium. With a sharp, metallic *click*, the first stainless steel handcuff locked around Julian’s wrist.
“We have the forty-eight-minute digital audio recording from your wife’s smartwatch, Mr. Vance,” Boyd said, leaning down so his words were picked up by every national news network. “The recording where you and Selena Cole discussed how many times to stab her, how to stage her fingerprints on the knife, and how you were going to spend the sixty-eight million dollars you embezzled from the Astraea Fund.”
Julian’s eyes bulged. The blood drained completely from his face until he looked like a corpse. His jaw went slack, his mouth opening and closing like a fish suffocating on a dry dock.
At that exact moment, the massive high-definition screen behind the podium flickered.
Henrik Lindqvist and the Vance Capital Board of Directors had remotely seized the presentation system. In place of the golden Vance Capital crest, the screen flashed a single, devastating corporate declaration:
**VANCE CAPITAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS: EMERGENCY RESOLUTION.**
**JULIAN VANCE TERMINATED AS CEO FOR CAUSE.**
**ALL EQUITY FROZEN PENDING FEDERAL EMBEZZLEMENT INDICTMENT.**
Flashbulbs detonated like a storm of lightning. Reporters were screaming questions, shoving microphones into Julian’s face as Boyd snapped the second cuff onto his right wrist.
*“Julian! Did you stab your wife?”*
*“Where is Selena Cole?”*
*“Did you steal sixty-eight million dollars?”*
Julian didn't answer. He couldn't. As Detective Boyd dragged him away from the podium in full view of the world, Julian Vance stumbled over his own feet, his expensive suit rumpled, his hair disheveled, tears of pure, pathetic terror streaming down his cheeks.
In ICU Room 402, Evelyn Cross switched off the television.
The silence returned. But it was no longer a suffocating silence. It was the absolute, crystalline quiet of total victory.
Dr. Reed looked down at me, his gray eyes shining with fierce pride. “Selena Cole was arrested ten minutes ago at your penthouse, Valerie. Detective Boyd’s team caught her walking toward the private elevator carrying three duffel bags filled with bearer bonds and your jewelry.”
I lay back against the pillows, exhaling a long, shuddering breath that felt like the first true breath of oxygen I had drawn in three years.
The monsters had been caged. The empire had fallen.

Now, the hardest battle was about to begin: rebuilding my life from the ashes.
