Chapter 19 - The Empty House

That evening, I returned to my house alone.

The front door clicked open into the quiet foyer.

There were no sounds of Michael’s football games blaring from the living room television. There was no smell of Evelyn’s cloying, expensive perfume lingering in the hallway. There were no piles of Chloe’s designer shopping bags dumped carelessly on my handcrafted console table.

The house was clean, pristine, and entirely mine.

I walked into the kitchen. The stainless steel appliances gleamed beneath the recessed lights. My copper Mauviel pots, retrieved from the police impound facility and thoroughly sanitized, hung from the ceiling rack like polished gold shields.

I didn't feel lonely. I felt expanded.

I felt the immense, terrifying, and exhilarating freedom of a woman who had systematically dismantled the prison built around her own generosity.

My phone chimed on the granite island.

It was an email notification from the Board of Directors of the Carolina Country Club:

*Dear Chef Bennett,*

*The Executive Committee voted unanimously this afternoon to offer Vanguard Hospitality Operations a three-year master consulting retainer to oversee all culinary and banquet operations for our regional properties, with an annual operating fee of $240,000.*

*We hope you will consider joining us.*

I smiled, closed the laptop, and set my phone to *Do Not Disturb*.

I pulled an eight-inch Shun knife from the wooden block, feeling its perfect, familiar balance in my palm.

I reached into the refrigerator, pulled out a single, perfectly aged ribeye steak, two sprigs of fresh rosemary from my garden, and three cloves of garlic.

I wasn't cooking for a crowd.

I wasn't cooking to prove my worth to a narcissist.

I wasn't cooking to save someone else from the consequences of their own deceit.

May you like

I was cooking for myself.
