Chapter 4 - The 24-Hour Ultimatum

Rowan took a step toward her, his fists clenched so hard his knuckles turned white. Every instinct screamed at him to tear the truth out of her throat, but the chilling calm in her posture stopped him. A sociopath did not smile when caught unless she believed she held all the cards.
"Why today, Vanessa?" Rowan asked, the cold air between them crackling with malice. "You've been in this house for over a year. You played the doting stepmother. Why try to kill a nine-month-old baby in broad daylight on an open terrace?"
Vanessa let out a sharp, mocking laugh that bounced off the dusty attic rafters. She kicked the lockbox with the toe of her designer flat.
"Because the clock ran out, darling," Vanessa said, tilting her head. "Do you even know the conditions of your own family’s wealth? Or were you too busy mourning Clara to read the fine print of the Hayes Dynasty Trust?"
Rowan froze. The Hayes Dynasty Trust had been established by his late grandfather—an impenetrable legal fortress holding over three hundred million dollars in commercial real estate, shipping assets, and overseas securities.
"Tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM," Vanessa continued, her eyes sparkling with malicious triumph, "Lily reaches nine months of age. Under Section 14 of your grandfather's trust, the moment your biological child reaches nine months, the entire principal of the estate locks permanently into an irrevocable child-protection conservatorship. From that moment on, neither you, nor any future spouse, nor any corporate board can touch a single cent of the principal until Lily turns twenty-five."
Rowan’s mind raced. He had known about the trust’s protective clauses, but in the blur of grief following Clara's death, the specific dates had faded from his focus.
"And if Lily died before nine months?" Rowan asked, his voice shaking with revulsion.
"If the biological heir dies before the milestone without another sibling," Vanessa purred, "the entire estate automatically converts into unrestricted community property for the surviving spouse upon your death or incapacitation. And since I am your legally wedded wife..." She tapped her chin mockingly. "Everything falls to me."
"You were running out of time," Rowan whispered, the horrifying jigsaw puzzle snapping together. "Tomorrow was the deadline. If Lily lived past tonight, you couldn't touch the fortune."
"Bingo, genius," Vanessa sneered. "I tried to be patient. I tried to play the sweet, nurturing stepmother. I even slipped trace amounts of digitalis into her baby formula for three weeks, hoping she’d just stop breathing in her crib like a tragic case of sudden infant death syndrome. But that damn Elena tested every batch of milk! The old woman was suspicious from day one. So today, when the sun was shining and Elena was distracted with tea, I decided to take matters into my own hands."
"You're insane," Rowan choked out. "You think you can just kill my daughter, kill me, and walk away with hundreds of millions?"
"I don't think, Rowan. I know," Vanessa smiled, stepping back toward the attic door. "Because you don't know the half of it. You think I’m working alone? You think I’m the only one who wanted Clara buried?"
She reached into her sweater pocket and produced a small remote detonator with a blinking red LED.
Rowan’s blood ran cold. "What is that?"
"David and I have been liquidating your offshore reserves for forty-eight hours," Vanessa whispered. "And right now, down in the basement, next to the main gas line of this lovely historical estate, there’s a little pressure cooker filled with commercial blasting compound. If you take one step toward me, Rowan, I press this button, and this house becomes your funeral pyre."
"You're bluffing," Rowan said, his voice flat, though his instincts flared with adrenaline.
"Try me," she hissed, her eyes wild with madness. "Let me walk out of this house with that lockbox, or neither of us leaves this attic alive. The choice is yours. Stay here and burn, or let me walk. But remember—even if you survive tonight, Lily is still at St. Jude’s. And you left her guarded by two men who work for a private firm whose owner is on David Vance’s payroll."
Rowan’s heart stopped.
*The hospital security.*
He hadn't vetted the security contractors; he had called the first high-end firm listed in his company’s emergency rolodex—a firm Clara had originally contracted, which was managed by Vance Financial.
"You have twenty-four hours to sign the conservatorship waiver, Rowan," Vanessa said, backing out of the door, clutching the metal lockbox to her chest. "If you sign the papers David sends to your phone by midnight tomorrow, Lily lives in an orphanage in Europe. If you refuse, or if you call the police, she won't survive the night in that hospital bed."

With a mocking wave, Vanessa pulled the attic door shut and locked the heavy exterior deadbolt from the outside.
