Chapter 8 - The Smoking Gun

"Kill him!" David shrieked, backing frantically up the boarding stairs toward the cabin. "Shoot him now!"

The two private security contractors on the tarmac drew their submachine guns, leveling them directly at Rowan’s chest.

Rowan didn't flinch. He didn't run. He stopped twenty feet away, his gaze locked solely on Vanessa.

Suddenly, a blinding beam of light erupted from the roof of Hangar 4, illuminating the entire tarmac in surgical daylight.

A high-powered sniper shot cracked through the roar of the jet engines.

The lead security guard dropped his weapon, clutching his shattered shoulder with a scream of agony. The second guard turned to run, but a second shot tore through his thigh, pinning him to the concrete.

High on the catwalk of Hangar 4 stood Marcus Vance, holding a customized tactical rifle, his trench coat billowing in the gale.

"Federal authorities are two minutes out, David!" Marcus’s amplified voice boomed through the hangar’s public address system. "Throw down your weapons and get on the ground!"

David Vance completely lost his nerve. He dropped his briefcase, reams of bearer bonds and foreign passports scattering into the jet exhaust like confetti, and fell to his knees on the wet aluminum stairs, sobbing hysterically. "Don't shoot! I surrender! Vanessa made me do it! It was all Vanessa’s idea!"

Vanessa looked down at her pathetic, sniveling brother, disgust contorting her beautiful features.

She didn't surrender. She didn't drop to her knees.

Instead, Vanessa reached into her handbag and pulled out a small, chrome .38 revolver. She didn't aim it at Marcus. She aimed it directly at Rowan’s forehead.

"You should have died with Clara, Rowan!" Vanessa screamed over the roar of the engines, the rain plastering her hair across her twisted, furious face. "You were supposed to be the broken widower who drank himself to death! Why wouldn't you just die?!"

Rowan walked forward, closing the distance between them, ignoring the barrel of the gun pointed at his eyes. Each step was measured, calm, terrifyingly resolute.

"Because Clara gave me something to live for," Rowan said, his voice cutting through the tempest. "And because she left behind the truth."

Rowan reached into his soaked jacket and pulled out a small, waterproof digital audio recorder. He clicked play.

Vanessa’s own voice blasted through the speaker, crisp, cold, and undeniable:

*“Loosen the brake bleeder valves on her Lexus while she’s in the restaurant. Make sure she goes off the bridge. I’ll handle Rowan afterward.”*

Vanessa’s finger froze on the trigger. Her pupils dilated in absolute shock. "Where... where did you get that?"

"David kept insurance on you, Vanessa," Rowan said, stepping onto the first rung of the metal stairs. "Just like you kept insurance on him. You were never partners. You’re just two rats tearing each other apart over scraps."

"Shut up!" she shrieked, cocking the revolver's hammer. "I will blow your brains all over this runway!"

"Do it," Rowan said, taking another step upward. He was now just five feet below her. "Pull the trigger, Vanessa. Because if you don't kill me right now, you spend the rest of your miserable life inside a concrete box, remembering every single day that an eight-month-old baby beat you."

Vanessa’s hand trembled violently. The sociopathic certainty that had guided her entire life shattered against the immovable wall of Rowan’s fearless rage. She saw no fear in him. None. Only the absolute certainty of her own destruction.

In the distance, the night sky lit up with flashing red and blue lights. A convoy of twenty state police cruisers and federal tactical vehicles smashed through the broken airfield gates, sirens screaming like a chorus of righteous furies.

Vanessa looked at the approaching cruisers, then down at the gun in her shaking hand.

Panic finally broke through her frozen vanity.

With a desperate, animalistic scream, Vanessa turned the gun toward herself.

Rowan lunged.

Before she could pull the trigger, Rowan’s hand clamped around the revolver’s cylinder like an iron vise. He twisted her wrist downward with brutal efficiency, wrenching the weapon from her manicured fingers and tossing it spinning across the wet tarmac.

He grabbed Vanessa by the lapels of her soaked designer coat, pulling her face inches from his.

"Death is too easy for you, Vanessa," Rowan whispered into her ear, his voice freezing the rain on her cheeks. "You are going to live. You are going to sit in a cell, and you are going to watch my daughter grow up to be everything you could never be."

May you like

He shoved her down onto the metal stairs just as tactical officers swarmed the runway, assault rifles raised, tackling David and pinning Vanessa to the freezing metal.
