Chapter 5 - The Stolen Lineage

The arrival of the Oakridge police and two paramedics shifted the battleground from private tragedy to public spectacle. Clara was immediately attended to on the carpet by two EMTs, who applied pressure gauze to her lacerated forehead and wrapped her shock-trembling frame in an aluminum thermal blanket.

Evelyn, however, had already adopted the persona of an aristocratic victim.

"Officer, thank God you are here," Evelyn said, holding a dainty hand against her bruised shoulder, speaking to Officer Miller, a seasoned suburban cop who clearly recognized the Vance name. "My daughter-in-law suffered a severe postpartum psychotic break. She attacked me when I came over to check on the baby. My son had to physically restrain her, but he's in shock. Look at her—she’s completely unhinged!"

Jack watched his mother spin the narrative with practiced, sociopathic ease. For a fleeting second, he realized how many times in his childhood she had done this: turning her own cruelty into someone else's fault, making his father apologize for her tantrums, making Jack feel guilty for his own tears.

"That's a lie," Jack said, his voice flat, heavy, and resonant. He stepped in front of Officer Miller. "My mother broke into this house. She assaulted my wife. She slammed Clara’s head into my son’s crib. I witnessed it with my own eyes."

Officer Miller blinked, stunned by Jack’s blunt testimony. Suburban sons rarely accused high-society matriarchs of felony assault.

"Jack, sweetheart, you're confused," Evelyn said smoothly, though her eyes shot daggers at him. "You just walked in. You saw the struggle, but you didn't see how it started."

"I saw everything, Mother," Jack said, his voice vibrating with disgust. "And I know why you did it."

The real motive was far more sinister than aristocratic snobbery. Jack had spent the last two months reviewing the Vance Family Trust alongside the estate lawyers. Harrison Vance’s will had contained a very specific, ironclad clause that Evelyn had spent thirty years trying to conceal: *The entire principal of the Vance Estate was to bypass Evelyn and transfer directly to Jack’s firstborn legitimate child upon their birth, leaving Evelyn with a modest annual stipend of fifty thousand dollars.*

Harrison had known what his wife was. He had known her greed, her narcissism, her obsession with power. He had structured the trust to ensure that the moment a new generation was born, Evelyn’s grip on the purse strings would be permanently broken.

For thirty years, Evelyn had lived like royalty off the trust’s investments. But the day Leo was born, the countdown began. The trust attorneys had scheduled the formal asset reallocation meeting for tomorrow morning at ten o'clock.

If Leo was proven to be illegitimate, the transfer would be voided. Evelyn would retain full operational control of fourteen million dollars. And if Clara was framed as an adulteress and an unfit, psychotic mother, Jack would be left broken, pliable, and entirely dependent on Evelyn once more.

"The trust meeting is at ten tomorrow, isn't it, Mother?" Jack said quietly, his voice cutting through the nursery like a knife.

Evelyn’s face hardened, the mask of maternal concern dropping entirely, revealing the cold, reptilian greed underneath.
