Chapter 9 - The Choice

At 9:00 PM, Jack arrived at the Vance ancestral estate—a sprawling, white-columned antebellum mansion on the highest hill in Oakridge. The gates were open, guarded by private security Evelyn had hired after being released on bail.

Jack didn't ask for permission. He strode past the security guards, his towering frame radiating such violent authority that neither guard dared lay a hand on him.

He kicked open the double mahogany doors of the grand foyer.

Evelyn was sitting in the parlor, sipping scotch from a crystal tumbler, her attorney Arthur Sterling sitting opposite her with stacks of estate binders. She wore a high-collared black silk dress to hide the bruises Jack had left on her shoulders.

"Jack," she said, her voice dripping with ice. "You're trespassing on my property."

"It's not your property, Evelyn," Jack said, tossing a thick leather binder onto the glass coffee table, shattering an antique porcelain coaster.

Inside the binder were three documents:

1. The certified paternity test proving Leo’s 99.999% lineage.

2. Dr. Julian Ross’s sworn video confession detailing Evelyn’s bribery and subornation of perjury.

3. The irrevocable execution order of the Harrison Vance Family Trust, signed by the senior probate judge an hour ago, legally stripping Evelyn of every cent, every property deed, and every banking asset, transferring sole ownership directly to baby Leo Vance, with Jack as the exclusive trustee.

Arthur Sterling glanced at the documents, adjusted his glasses, and sighed. He closed his briefcase, stood up, and looked at Evelyn. "Evelyn... it's over. If this goes to criminal court, you are facing ten to fifteen years for attempted murder, conspiracy, and fraud. You have no cards left."

Evelyn didn't look at her lawyer. Her eyes remained locked on Jack, burning with manic, unrepentant hatred.

"You would destroy your own mother for that peasant?" she hissed, rising to her feet, her voice trembling with venom. "I gave you life! I built this name! I protected your father’s memory!"

"You destroyed my father," Jack said, stepping forward until he loomed over her, his shadow swallowing her completely. "He died in that chair because he couldn't stand the sight of what you were. And you almost killed my wife."

Jack pulled a single, folded sheet of paper from his coat pocket and placed it on the table. It was a permanent, non-negotiable legal agreement.

"You have two choices, Mother," Jack said, his voice deadly quiet. "Choice one: You plead guilty to aggravated felony assault tomorrow morning. You sign over the deed to this house, you forfeit your trust stipend entirely, and you accept a ten-year prison sentence in a state penitentiary."

Evelyn swallowed hard, her chest heaving. "And... choice two?"

"Choice two: You sign an immediate confession of civil liability. You deed this entire estate, the trust, and all family assets to Leo tonight. You accept a lifetime, international restraining order that forbids you from ever coming within five hundred miles of me, Clara, or my son. You move to our estate in Switzerland, alone, living on the bare minimum monthly stipend the court allows. If you ever speak Clara’s name, if you ever send a letter, if you ever step foot on American soil again, the district attorney unseals the attempted murder indictment, and you die in a concrete cell."

Evelyn stared at the paper. Her hands, usually so steady and poised, began to shake violently. The matriarch who had ruled Oakridge for half a century was stripped naked, her kingdom turned to ash.

With trembling fingers, tears of rage and humiliation streaming down her heavily powdered face, Evelyn Vance picked up the pen and signed her own exile.

Jack took the paper, turned on his heel, and walked out of the mansion into the warm rain, never looking back.
