Chapter 1 - The SlapThe slap sounded like a gunshot.

For one frozen second, nobody on Maple Street moved.

Bessie Mitchell stood on her front porch with one hand pressed against her cheek, staring at Lennox—the woman who had spent years turning her only son against her.

Around them, the quiet neighborhood had become an unwilling audience. Mrs. Patterson stood frozen beside her rose bushes. The Johnson boy had stopped mowing his lawn. Even the mail carrier had stepped out of his truck.

Lennox lifted her chin.

“You deserved it.”

Bessie looked at her son.

“Terrence?”

Her son stood beside the SUV, pale and silent.

His wife had just struck his mother.

And he couldn't even say a word.

Bessie felt something inside her break—not from the slap, but from the realization that the little boy she had raised had become a stranger.

She straightened her shoulders.

“Get off my property.”

Lennox laughed.

“Make me.”

Bessie reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone.

“I will.”

She dialed 911.

The confidence vanished from Lennox's face.

And somehow, she knew this was only the beginning.
