Chapter 2 - The $600,000 MistakeAt the police station, Bessie gave her statement.

She told them about the slap.

Then she told them everything that had happened before it.

The house.

The money.

The lies.

The $600,000 they had received after selling their property.

Money that should have secured Terrence's future.

Instead, it had disappeared into designer jewelry, luxury spas, expensive dinners, vacations, and one mysterious business investment Lennox insisted would “change their lives.”

It hadn't.

Now they were homeless.

And Lennox believed Bessie owed them a place to stay.

Detective Reynolds listened carefully.

“How long has this been going on?”

Bessie stared at the table.

“Years.”

That night, alone in her kitchen, Bessie opened the old file cabinet where she kept important documents.

Her fingers stopped on a folder.

TERRENCE — HOUSE PURCHASE.

She opened it.

There it was.

A document she hadn't looked at in years.

A promissory note.

$40,000.

Five percent interest.

Secured against the property.

Bessie slowly smiled.

For the first time in weeks, she felt something she had almost forgotten.

Hope.
