Chapter 14 - The Trophies of Sin

I pressed my ear against the polished mahogany wood.

Inside, paper rustled, followed by the mechanical grinding of an industrial shredder chewing through thick manila folders.

*‘Get the tax files from 2012 to 2016 into the bin,’* Julian’s voice barked from inside. *‘Every trust record bearing the Reed or Hale name. Burn the hard drives in the chemical incinerator at the warehouse tonight.’*

*‘Mr. Vance, the courier from the airport is here,’* a second voice replied—one of his private security heavies. *‘Your private jet to Zurich departs at eight. If you aren't through customs before the federal prosecutor signs that warrant, you won't leave the country.’*

*‘I’ll be on that plane,’* Julian snapped. *‘Take these three boxes down to the shredder truck at the dock. Now.’*

Footsteps approached the door.

I flattened myself behind a towering ficus plant in the decorative alcove just as the mahogany door swung open. A burly man in a dark suit walked out, carrying two heavy cardboard archive boxes. He walked past my hiding spot, whistling under his breath, heading toward the service elevator.

The moment the elevator doors closed behind him, I slipped through the open mahogany doors into Julian’s office.

Julian was standing with his back to me, hunched over an open mahogany wall panel.

The oil painting of the Willamette River was swung aside on brass hinges. Behind it stood a massive, heavy-duty floor safe, its circular steel door wide open. Julian was frantically pulling stacks of bearer bonds and foreign currency out, shoving them into an aluminum briefcase on his desk.

"You're packing light, Julian," I said, my voice cold as an open grave.

Julian spun around as if stung by a hornet.

His face drained of all color. His eyes widened, darting from my face down to the heavy iron pry bar held low at my side.

"Robert," Julian stammered, his polished facade collapsing into naked panic. "How... how did you get up here?"

"Ethan gave me the keys," I said, taking two slow, deliberate steps forward. "He sends his regards."

Julian backed away until his thighs hit the edge of his mahogany desk. His eyes flicked toward the desk drawer—where I knew a firearm was likely kept.

"Don't touch that drawer, Julian," I warned, raising the pry bar. "I’m an old man with nothing left to lose. Try it, and I’ll break your collarbone before your fingers touch the wood."

Julian froze. He raised his hands, forcing a ragged, trembling chuckle.

"Robert... let's talk. You don't understand the pressure I was under. Mara’s trust... the market crashed! I was trying to save our investments! I panicked!"

"You poisoned her," I said, my voice dropping into a guttural growl that didn't sound like my own. "You put digitalis in her compounded pills. You forged my signature. And then you told me Ethan killed her with stress."

"She was going to ruin me!" Julian shrieked, the mask of the sophisticated attorney shattering into pure, hysterical venom. "She was going to report me to the Bar! I built this firm from nothing! I wasn't going to let a self-righteous woman and her bastard son take everything I owned!"

"Where is the bottle?" I demanded.

Julian’s eyes flicked toward the open safe.

On the top steel shelf, sitting beside a stack of gold bars, was a small, amber glass prescription bottle with a faded white label.

Beside it lay an old, cassette tape labeled: *MARA – FINAL RECORDING.*
