Chapter 9 - Awakening

Ethan’s eyes cracked open.

They were Mara’s eyes—the exact same pale hazel, flecked with gold, rimmed with dark exhaustion. For a long, terrifying moment, his gaze wandered aimlessly across the ceiling tiles, unfocused, clouded by heavy narcotics and brain trauma.

Then his eyes drifted down and locked onto mine.

A jolt ran through his frame. His heart rate monitor ticked upward: 95... 110... 125. The ventilator hissed in his throat, and a muffled, frantic sound tore from his chest. He tried to pull his hand away, fear—pure, unadulterated fear—flaring in his pupils.

He thought I was still the man who hated him. He thought I was there to finish what I started ten years ago.

"No, no, no," I choked out, wrapping both of my hands around his trembling fist, refusing to let go. "Easy, son. Look at me. Look at my face, Ethan. I have the journal. I was at the bank. Box 314. I heard the recording."

Ethan froze. The terror in his eyes slowly fractured, replaced by confusion, then a disbelief so profound it made him shudder.

"I know what Julian did," I whispered, tears dripping onto the white hospital sheet. "I know he threatened to frame me. I know you took the blame to save my worthless life. Ethan... you spent ten years in the dark for a man who didn't even have the decency to listen to you."

Tears spilled from the corners of Ethan’s eyes, cutting clean tracks through the dried blood on his temple. The plastic breathing tube prevented him from speaking, but his lips moved beneath the medical tape, forming words I didn't need to hear to understand:

*You... believe me?*

"I believe you," I said, my voice cracking. "And I swear to God, on your mother’s grave, Julian Vance will never touch you again. He’s going to pay for every single day you lost."

The door swung open. Marlow stepped in, breathing heavily, holstering his Glock. His trench coat was soaked from the rain.

"He got away," Marlow spat, wiping water from his face. "Had a rental sedan idling on the third level of the garage. Blew the exit gate. But I put out an APB across three counties. State troopers are monitoring the airports and the interstate."

Ethan’s eyes shifted to Marlow, then darted toward the nightstand next to the bed. With trembling effort, Ethan tapped his index finger against the bedside table twice.

"What is it, Ethan?" I asked, leaning in close.

Ethan pointed with his bruised finger toward the pocket of the denim jacket that had been cut off him by paramedics, which now hung on a plastic hook behind the door.

Marlow stepped over, unzipping the jacket’s interior lining. He felt along the inner hem.

"There's something sewn into the seam," Marlow muttered. He pulled out a pocketknife, sliced the thread, and extracted a sleek, silver USB thumb drive stamped with a red corporate logo: **Vance Capital Holdings.**

"That’s Julian’s private firm," I said, recognizing the crest.

Ethan nodded once, a faint, agonizing movement.

"What’s on this drive, kid?" Marlow asked gently.

Ethan mouthed a single word through the ventilator tube.

*Everything.*
