Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Safe

Twenty minutes later, the bridal suite was locked from the inside. A makeup artist, summoned under strict non-disclosure agreements, worked frantically with heavy concealer, contouring powders, and cooling pads to mask the purple contusions spreading across Emily's jawline and cheek.
The ruined heirloom dress had been hastily stripped away and discarded in a corner like a bloody crime scene rag. In its place, Emily stood wearing an architectural ivory silk slip dress that Daniel had miraculously arranged to have delivered from a Fifth Avenue boutique within minutes. It was stark, modern, and razor-sharp—completely shedding the traditional weight of the Sterling family past.
"You look stunning, Miss Vance," the makeup artist whispered, her hands still trembling from the residual tension in the room. "You can barely see the swelling under the veil."
"Thank you, Sarah. Leave us, please," Emily said quietly.
Once the suite cleared, Emily didn't look at her reflection. Instead, she locked the door, hurried to her vanity, and reached into the secret compartment of her leather designer tote bag. She retrieved a burner phone and punched in an encrypted number from memory.
It answered on the second ring.
"Is it done?" a raspy, aged voice asked on the other end.
"Margaret walked right into the trap," Emily whispered, her voice stripped of all bridal fragility. "She attacked me in the suite. Daniel used the distraction to serve the embezzlement audit. She’s completely disarmed and disgraced."
"And Daniel?" the voice questioned with cold urgency. "Does he suspect you’re the one who leaked the Cayman bank numbers to his chief legal officer?"
Emily paused, glancing at the locked door. She touched the bruised cut on her lip. The physical pain was real, but the game was far larger than Margaret could ever comprehend.
"He thinks he’s my white knight," Emily replied softly. "He thinks he discovered the fraud himself to protect me from her wrath. He has no idea that I came into his life specifically to expose what they did to my father."
Ten years ago, Emily Vance’s father had been the lead naval architect for Sterling Maritime. When he discovered critical hull defects in three major cargo liners that Margaret Sterling refused to repair, he was framed for corporate espionage, blacklisted, and driven to financial ruin until his heart gave out in a cheap Queens motel. Emily had spent a decade reinventing her identity, building an impeccable corporate resume, and orchestrating her path into Daniel Sterling’s world.
"Be careful, child," the voice on the phone warned. "Daniel Sterling is his mother's blood. The apple does not fall far from the serpent's tree. If he discovers you played him..."
"He won't," Emily said firmly. "Today, I take the Sterling name. And once I have power of attorney over his shares, the Sterling empire will pay for every single tear my father wept."
She ended the call, tossed the burner phone back into the hidden lining, and took a deep, steadying breath. Smoothing down the clean silk of her new gown, she unbolted the door.
The organ music began to swell from the grand cathedral sanctuary. The thunderous chords of the bridal march vibrated through the stone floor beneath her heels.
