Chapter 5 - The Poisoned Toast

The wedding reception at the historic Sterling Manor on Long Island was a masterpiece of opulence and suppressed hostility. Crystal chandeliers cascaded from thirty-foot ceilings, illuminating long tables draped in black velvet and laden with champagne towers.

Yet beneath the lilting melodies of the string quartet, the tension was suffocating. Every guest knew Margaret Sterling had been expelled from the church. Rumors of fraud, assault, and family betrayal were being traded over caviar blinis.

Emily stood by the grand marble fireplace, clutching a flute of champagne she had no intention of drinking. Her wrist still bore the faint red marks of Daniel’s grip from the altar.

Daniel approached her, glass in hand, radiating charismatic confidence. "You're not drinking, my love. Celebrating your victory over my mother?"

Emily turned to him, her eyes razor-sharp. "You knew who I was the entire time. How?"

"You think a Sterling marries without a forensic background check?" Daniel smiled coldly, taking a slow sip. "I knew who your father was before our second date. I watched you feed financial discrepancies to our legal board. In fact, Emily... I helped leave those breadcrumbs for you to find."

Emily narrowed her eyes. "Why? Why expose your own mother?"

"Because Margaret was a dinosaur," Daniel said, stepping into her personal space, his voice dripping with venom. "She was reckless, sentimental, and running this company into insolvency with her private greed. I couldn't remove her without triggering a catastrophic shareholder rebellion—unless she committed an unpardonable public sin. You were the perfect catalyst. An ambitious, vengeful orphan who thought she was playing the system."

"You used me to stage a corporate coup," Emily breathed, a wave of cold fury washing over her. "You let her beat me! You let her rip my hair out on our wedding day just to make her look completely deranged in front of witnesses!"

"And it worked flawlessly," Daniel whispered, completely unrepentant. "The board will vote to ratify my sole ownership tomorrow morning. And as my wife, signed under the ironclad prenuptial agreement you agreed to three weeks ago, you have zero claim to my assets. You played your part, Emily. Now you get to be the ornamental Mrs. Sterling, living in luxury, completely at my mercy."

Before Emily could retaliate, the grand French doors leading to the courtyard burst open with a deafening crash of thunder and rain.

A drenched, unhinged figure stepped into the ballroom.

Margaret Sterling had returned. Her soaked silk dress clung to her frame, her mascara was smeared across her pale face, and in her hand, she wasn't holding a weapon—she was holding a sleek metallic briefcase handcuffed to her wrist. Behind her stood two men in tailored suits flashing federal badges.

"STOP THE CELEBRATION!" Margaret’s voice tore through the classical music, bringing the entire ballroom to an instant, terrified halt.

Daniel set his glass down on the mantelpiece, his jaw clenching. "Mother. You were warned about trespassing."

"I’m not trespassing, Daniel!" Margaret laughed hysterically, lifting the handcuffed briefcase. "I brought federal agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission! You think you outsmarted me with your little audit? You idiot boy! Open your eyes and look at who you just married!"
