Chapter 15 - The 04:00 AM Harvest

Marcus recoiled as if burned, his back slamming against a metal console. His mind spun in a sickening whirlpool of cognitive dissonance. The face in the tank was Marcus Vance. Same scar over the left eyebrow from a childhood bike accident. Same crooked bridge of the nose. Same cellular constellation of moles along the collarbone.

"Do you finally see the horizon, Marcus?"

The voice echoed through the overhead PA system, crisp and undistorted. Marcus raised his weapon, sweeping the shadows of the mezzanine catwalks forty feet above him.

"Show yourself, you sick bastard!" Marcus shouted, his voice cracking with fury. "Who am I? What did you do to my family?"

A single spotlight clicked on above the center platform. Standing at the railing was Julian Montgomery—dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, pristine and spotless, holding a glass of amber scotch. His skin was taut, his eyes devoid of the tremors Marcus had observed in the interrogation room days ago. This was a man at the absolute peak of biological vigor.

"Your family?" Julian smiled down with terrifying serenity. "Detective, your father was a low-level janitor at the clinic who thought he was rescuing an abandoned orphan when he smuggled you out of the facility in an industrial laundry basket in 1989. He felt guilty. He gave you his name. He gave you a normal life, a modest house in Queens, and pushed you toward the police academy so you could protect yourself."

Julian took a sip from his glass. "He didn't save you, Marcus. He stole Alistair’s secondary sequencing prototype. You were never meant to be a detective. You were meant to be the biological backup system for Julian-2. You are my spare heart, my spare lungs, my spare marrow."

"You're lying," Marcus snarled, his finger whitening on the trigger. "My records, my blood type, my DNA—"

"Are identical to mine, with one minor genetic switch flipped on the 14th chromosome," Julian interrupted, his voice dropping into cold authority. "Why do you think you were assigned to the Montgomery case? Why did every tip line lead directly to your desk? Why did you feel an obsession with that locked nursery the moment you crossed the threshold?"

Marcus’s chest constricted. He remembered the irrational draw he had felt toward the estate—the uncanny familiarity of the floorboards, the dream-like memories of the nursery’s music box he had sworn he had never heard before.

"The clock is running, Marcus," Julian said, checking a vintage platinum pocket watch. "At 4:00 AM, the automated protocol purges the sub-level with nitrogen gas. You have twenty minutes to decide whether you die here as a counterfeit cop, or take your seat at the table as the true architect of the dynasty."
