Chapter 21 - The Unborn Sequence

The dashboard clock glowed: *04:47 AM*.

Marcus sat in silence, listening to the steady slap of the windshield wipers. His radio crackled with static, the dispatch channel unaware of the war that had just concluded beneath the Montgomery foundation. He picked up the radio mic, intending to call in the fire, to declare the case closed, to submit his badge, and to disappear forever.

Then, the center console's auxiliary screen flickered to life.

Marcus froze. The screen wasn’t connected to any network; it was hardwired into the squad car’s local storage. Yet, an incoming video call overrode the system interface, displaying a green live-link connection.

Marcus’s hand hovered over the touchscreen. Every instinct told him to put a bullet through the dash and walk away into the night. But the shadow of the nursery, the locked door that had started this entire nightmare, held him captive one last time.

He pressed the icon.

The screen resolved into a high-definition image of a pristine, sunlit nursery—not in the decaying Montgomery mansion, but inside a modern, ultra-luxurious penthouse overlooking the skyline of downtown Manhattan.

In the center of the room stood an antique mahogany crib, identical to the one Marcus had seen on the third floor.

Standing beside the crib was a woman whose face made Marcus’s heart stop entirely. It was Claire Vance—his sister, who had reportedly died of leukemia when they were seven years old.

She was alive, dressed in designer silk, holding a newborn infant wrapped in a pale blue blanket.

Claire looked directly into the camera lens, her eyes cold, calculating, and unmistakably Montgomery.

"You did well with the cleanup, Marcus," Claire said, her voice smooth and devoid of familial warmth. "Julian-4 was always too unstable for the board's liking. His theatrics were becoming an unacceptable liability."

She turned the baby toward the camera. On the newborn's tiny inner wrist was a faint, distinct birthmark—the exact same constellation of moles that Marcus carried on his own skin.

"Julian-5 is safe," Claire whispered with a chilling, angelic smile. "And now that Eleanor and the old precinct records are reduced to ash, Detective... you are officially the only guardian left who knows where the nursery keys are kept."

In the background of the penthouse feed, the heavy sound of a brass deadbolt clicked into place.

Claire tilted her head, her smile fading into a look of absolute, lethal authority.

"Drive to the city, Marcus. The board is waiting. If you don't arrive before sunrise... the nursery door stays locked forever."

The screen went black.

Marcus stared at the dark monitor, his hand trembling on the steering wheel, as the headlights of three black SUVs suddenly ignited behind him in the rearview mirror, blocking the only road out of the estate.
