Chapter 1 - The Gilded CageThe grand ballroom of the Beaumont Estate glittered beneath a forest of crystal chandeliers.

Diamonds flashed at every corner. Champagne flowed freely. Men in tailored tuxedos spoke in quiet voices about investments, politics, and power while women in designer gowns smiled as though the entire world belonged to them.

And at the center of it all sat Julian Beaumont.

He was the heir to one of the most powerful fortunes in the city, yet tonight he looked less like a king than a prisoner.

His bespoke wheelchair rested on the polished marble floor, surrounded by an invisible wall of pity.

For seven years, Julian had been unable to walk.

Seven years of doctors.

Seven years of surgeries.

Seven years of promises that ended in disappointment.

He had eventually stopped believing in miracles.

Standing beside him was Victoria.

She looked flawless in a deep sapphire velvet gown, a diamond necklace resting against her throat like a crown. She smiled whenever someone approached Julian, but the moment they turned away, the warmth vanished from her face.

She loved the Beaumont name.

She loved the mansion.

She loved the power.

But she hated the wheelchair.

Then the ballroom doors opened.

The conversations slowly died.

A tiny girl walked into the room.

Her name was Lily.

She wore a simple navy-blue pinafore that looked almost painfully ordinary among the diamonds and silk.

People stared.

Lily ignored them.

She walked directly toward Julian.

Then, without hesitation, she lowered herself onto the cold marble floor.

A silver basin sat beside her.

She pulled it closer.

Julian stared down at her.

"What are you doing?"

Lily gently rolled up the cuffs of his expensive trousers.

"I'm going to wash your feet."

A few guests exchanged amused looks.

Victoria's lips curled into a smile.

Julian almost laughed.

Almost.

Then Lily looked into his eyes.

"And then," she whispered, "you'll walk again."

For the first time in years, something moved inside Julian that had nothing to do with his legs.

May you like

Hope.

It frightened him.
