Chapter 16 - Cold Quarry Reckoning

The engine of the old Bronco roared as it crested the gravel lip of the limestone quarry.
Dust billowed behind the tires in a thick, choking cloud.
At the center of the gravel pit, suspended by a rusting crane cable over a two-hundred-foot drop-off, hung Vanessa's red Porsche Cayenne.
The car swayed gently in the wind, its front tires spinning inches above open air.
Standing beside the crane cab was Marcus Vance.
He didn't look like the tailored corporate raider who had strutted through Jack’s anniversary party.
His linen suit was torn, his hair plastered with grease and sweat, his eyes bloodshot and wide with panic.
Two heavily armed men in gray tactical plate carriers stood fifty feet behind him, their carbines trained on the driver's door of the Bronco.
Jack cut the ignition.
The canyon dropped into an eerie, hollow silence.
Jack stepped down from the truck, using his cane to stabilize his footing on the loose shale.
In his left hand, he held a single black solid-state drive.
"You look terrible, Marcus," Jack said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the rock bowl.
Marcus flinched at the sound, then barked a manic laugh.
"You think this is funny, Miller?" Marcus yelled, his voice cracking.
"You ruined me! The SEC froze every account! The feds are raiding my offices right now!"
"You ruined yourself," Jack said, taking two slow, deliberate steps forward.
"Lower the car, Marcus. Vanessa doesn't know anything about the Arlington manifests."
Inside the dangling Cayenne, Vanessa was pounding frantically against the passenger window, screaming soundlessly behind the glass.
"She knows enough to put me in ADX Florence for life!" Marcus shouted, waving a handheld release detonator.
"Toss the drive! Both of them! The hard drives and the backup keys!"
Jack raised the black plastic drive in his palm.
"This drive doesn't belong to you, Marcus. It belongs to the Department of Justice."
"I don't give a damn about the Justice Department!" Marcus screamed.
"The men who hired me... they don't negotiate! If I don't deliver those files by noon, they're going to skin me alive!"
"They won't get the chance," Jack said.
Above the quarry rim, four hundred yards up on the jagged limestone bluff, a single flash of sunlight glinted against glass.
It was Maya’s position.
Jack didn't break eye contact with Marcus.
"Who ordered the hit on my convoy in 2011, Marcus?"
Marcus hesitated, his face twitching.
"That wasn't me! I was just handling the offshore billing! It was Eleanor... Eleanor and the syndicate!"
"What syndicate?" Jack demanded, taking another step.
"The Aegis Directorate," Marcus blurted out, terror stripping away his last layer of arrogance.
"The private contractors who bought out the abandoned missile silos along Whisper Creek!"
"They don't want your house, Jack! They want the underground terminal! It links to the Vandenberg defense fiber network!"
Jack stopped walking.
The pieces finally locked into place with sickening clarity.
Whisper Creek wasn't just prime real estate.
It was an unmonitored back door into the western hemisphere's defense communication grid.
"Thank you, Marcus," Jack said quietly.
"For what?" Marcus stammered, raising the detonator.
"For the confession."
A sharp, whip-like crack echoed from the top of the canyon ridge.
The high-velocity round hit the crane's hydraulic winch line with surgical precision.
May you like
The steel cable snapped like a guitar string, whipping backward with violent force and smashing Marcus directly across the chest.
