Chapter 20 - The Voice on the Black Frequency

The progress bar on the server monitor hit **100%**.
A sharp electronic beep echoed through the damp concrete bunker.
Eleanor reached toward the console to pull the flash drive, but Jack fired a single round of heavy breaching buckshot into the server's main processing unit.
The computer exploded in a shower of blue sparks and shredded plastic.
Eleanor recoiled, shielding her face with her arms as hot smoke filled the air.
"It doesn't matter!" she gasped, laughing through the smoke. "The off-site mirror is already complete!"
Jack closed the distance in two strides, grabbing Eleanor by the collar of her jacket and slamming her back against the concrete wall.
The cold steel of the shotgun barrel rested beneath her chin.
"Who gave the order in brigade?" Jack demanded, his voice a low, terrifying growl that shook with ten years of suppressed fury.
"Who authorized the coordinates?"
Eleanor looked directly into his eyes, her smirk fading as she saw the sheer, unbridled lethality in his gaze.
"You really want to know?" she whispered, blood trickling from a scratch on her temple.
"He's been watching you build this little clinic for the last two weeks, Jack."
"He's the one who signed the property transfer into the trust."
Jack’s blood ran colder than the Pacific water.
"General Caldwell," Jack whispered.
His old commanding officer.
The man who had pinned the Silver Star to Jack’s uniform while he lay in a hospital bed at Walter Reed.
The man who had personally approved the non-profit charter for the Whisper Creek foundation forty-eight hours ago.
Suddenly, an old tactical radio transceiver sitting on the corner of the server rack crackled to life with static.
The green frequency light blinked steadily on an encrypted channel.
A voice cut through the hiss—measured, authoritative, and chillingly familiar.
*“Captain Miller. Stand down.”*
Jack stared at the radio, his chest freezing mid-breath.
*“You held the ground well, Jack. Better than expected,”* General Caldwell’s voice came through the speaker, crisp as an order from the tactical operations center.
*“Marcus was clumsy. Eleanor became a liability. But you’ve gathered all of them in one place for me.”*
Jack reached out, pressing the transmit button on the heavy microphone.
"Why, General?" Jack asked, his voice shaking with raw, wounded betrayal.
Over the radio, there was a long, cold pause.
Then the sound of an engine spooling up outside—the distinct, low-frequency thrum of an unmarked twin-rotor helicopter approaching Whisper Creek from the ocean.
*“Because some wars aren’t fought for the flag, Jack. They’re fought for the contract.”*
May you like
*“Look out the window, Captain.”*
A tremendous explosion ripped through the upper level of the mansion above their heads, sending chunks of stone raining down the shaft as the emergency lights died, plunging the bunker into absolute, terrifying darkness.
