Chapter 5 - Blood Money and Hidden Debt

The door handle of the study suddenly rattled aggressively.

“Dad? Open the door! I know you’re in there!” Daniel’s voice came muffled through the heavy wood, laced with panic and fury. “Dad, open this damn door right now!”

Arthur didn’t answer. He quickly plugged the thumb drive into his portable tablet, opening the encrypted folders stored within the black phone’s backup directory.

What poured across the screen was an unvarnished ledger of greed and moral decay.

Text messages between Daniel and Victoria dating back five years—months before Clara’s death:

*Victoria (May 14):* “She won’t give you the money, Dan. Her lawyers drafted an audit. If she sees the five million you took from the Vance account to cover the Macau debts, you’re going to federal prison.”

*Daniel (May 14):* “I know. I tried talking to her. She threatened to take Lily and file for divorce tomorrow.”

*Victoria (May 16):* “Then she can’t file. Accidents happen in the canyon during the spring storms, Dan. You either handle it, or we lose everything. Think about our future.”

*Daniel (May 18):* “The mechanic says it will take five minutes under the chassis. It will look like friction wear. But Lily might be in the car with her.”

*Victoria (May 18):* “Then the child goes with her. You can’t hesitate now.”

*Daniel (May 19):* “Done.”

Arthur’s eyes burned. The air left his lungs.

Daniel had known Lily was going to be in the car. He had known his own toddler daughter was strapped into the back of that vehicle when he paid a back-alley mechanic to sever the hydraulic lines. He had risked crushing his own child to death against the mountain rocks just to save his skin from a financial audit.

And when Lily miraculously survived, Daniel had taken her in, not out of love, but because she became the key to the vault. For four years, they had kept her isolated, frightened, starved of affection, waiting for the clock to run out until her seventh birthday, when they could declare her mad and claim the Vance empire.

The pounding on the door grew frantic.

“Dad! If you don’t open it, I’m kicking it down!” Daniel bellowed.

Arthur calmly slipped the black phone and the thumb drive into his inner coat pocket. He stood up, adjusted his tie, picked up his cane, and walked to the door.

He turned the brass key and pulled it open.
