Chapter 9 - The Choice

The days following the arrest were a whirlwind of media madness.

The story exploded across national headlines: *“BILLIONAIRE HEIR ARRESTED: THE FOUR-YEAR CONSPIRACY TO MURDER CLARA VANCE AND STARVE HIS OWN DAUGHTER.”* Camera crews swarmed the gates of the Sterling estate. Pundits debated the depths of human depravity on prime-time news.

Inside the quiet sanctuary of the estate, however, the world was still.

Arthur sat in his office with Clara’s family attorneys and the state-appointed family court judge. On the desk lay the legal paperwork for full, permanent legal and physical custody of Lily.

“Mr. Sterling,” the judge said gently, adjusting her glasses. “Given the extraordinary circumstances and the evidence provided, Daniel’s parental rights will be terminated by the end of the week. Victoria will face life without parole, as will Daniel. However, we must address Lily’s well-being.”

“She stays with me,” Arthur stated without hesitation.

“Mr. Sterling, you are seventy-two years old,” the judge noted softly. “The trauma this child has endured is catastrophic. She has witnessed abuse, neglect, and the horrific revelation of what happened to her mother. Are you prepared to devote every remaining day of your life to her therapy, her recovery, and her protection? Her maternal aunt in London has offered to take her into a quiet life abroad.”

Arthur paused. He looked out the window.

In the garden below, where only days ago Lily had knelt in chains on the scorching stone, a team of gardeners was dismantling the entire limestone patio. Arthur had ordered every single slab of stone ripped up and replaced with soft green grass and flowerbeds of Clara’s favorite white hydrangeas.

He could send Lily away. He could let her start fresh in London, far from the whispers and the tabloid headlines. It would be easier for him. He was an old man, tired, his health fraying under the strain of heartbreak.

Then, the study door creaked open.

Lily stood there, wearing clean clothes, holding a sketchpad Arthur had given her yesterday. She didn’t look at the judge or the lawyers. She looked directly at Arthur.

She walked slowly across the room, climbed onto the arm of Arthur’s chair, and rested her small hand over his weathered, wrinkled knuckles.

“Grandpa,” she whispered. “Are you going to send me away?”

Arthur felt a tear slip down his cheek. He looked into those clear, brave green eyes. He saw Clara’s spirit, stubborn and beautiful, surviving in the heart of this unbroken little girl.

Arthur picked up the gold fountain pen from the desk.

“No, Lily,” Arthur said, looking straight into the eyes of the judge. “You are never leaving my side.”
