Chapter 1 - The Chandelier's Shadow

The unrelenting storm battered the towering windows of the Vail estate, the crack of thunder perfectly masking the life-or-death struggle unfolding within the master suite. Beneath the oppressive, icy glow of a massive crystal chandelier, the air felt suffocatingly thin, heavy with the scent of sterile medical supplies and impending grief. Mrs. Vail, the formidable and untouchable matriarch of the family, thrashed violently against her gold-threaded silk sheets. Her frail hands clawed desperately at the plastic oxygen tube beneath her nose, her chest heaving as she fought for a single, agonizing breath. Naomi, the family’s fiercely loyal head maid, rushed to the bedside. She had served this family for two decades, and her hands were steady despite the cold panic rising in her throat. "Mrs. Vail, look at me," Naomi commanded gently but firmly, adjusting the frantic woman's pillows to open her airways. "Breathe for me. Slowly." The elderly woman’s eyes were completely blown wide with a visceral, primal terror—but it was a terror that had absolutely nothing to do with her failing lungs. "Naomi..." she gasped, her frail, age-spotted fingers gripping the maid's wrist with a sudden, shocking strength that bruised the skin. "Help me."
