Chapter 5 - Cracks in the Facade

Over the course of the next three agonizing days, Julian began to observe the woman he thought he loved through a new, deeply cynical lens. The rose-colored glasses were shattered. He noticed the minute, disturbing details: how Serena's eyes lingered a little too hungrily on the estate's sprawling trust documents left on his desk, and how her supposedly affectionate touches felt increasingly mechanical and timed. One rainy afternoon, he stood unseen in the hallway and watched her viciously berate a young floral delivery boy, her face twisted in an ugly, aristocratic snarl, only for her to instantly slip back into her sweet, breathy persona the second she heard Julian's footsteps approaching. Unable to shake the suffocating feeling of impending doom, Julian sought out Naomi in the industrial kitchens late that evening. In hushed, urgent tones, the maid presented him with the crushed amber vial, explaining exactly what it was and where she had found it. The undeniable, physical reality of the poison shattered Julian’s heart into a million jagged pieces, but in its place, a fierce, primal, and protective rage was ignited.
