Chapter 12 - THE SHADOW OVER ROOM 404

"Don't touch the blade," Lena’s voice was razor-sharp, cutting through the panic that had paralyzed the suite. She moved through the nursery like a seasoned investigator, snapping high-resolution frames of the scalpel, the angle of the blood splatter, and the scuffed rubber tread marks on the balcony balustrade.

Daniel stood by the doorway, his tie loosened, his face as pale as chalk. His fists were clenched so hard his knuckles shone white. Marcus was already down in security with six guards, scrubbing the private elevator feeds and perimeter sensors.

"How did someone reach a 40th-floor terrace in a thunderstorm?" Daniel’s voice trembled with a lethal, suppressed fury. "We spent four million dollars upgrading this security grid after the incident in the lobby!"

"They didn't climb up from the ground, Daniel," Lena said, crouching by the wet sill. She pointed her flashlight at a frayed nylon loop snagged on the gutter overhead. "They rappelled down from the roof. The access hatch on the mechanical deck was unlocked from the inside."

Emily sat on the nursery sofa, clutching Grace against her chest so tightly that the child squirmed. Her eyes were fixed on the document sitting inside an evidence bag on the coffee table. The words burned into her retinas.

"Emily," Daniel turned to her, his voice softening, but his eyes carried an agonizing shadow of doubt. "Look at me. Please."

Emily looked up. The warmth that usually filled his gaze was clouded with shock. "Daniel, I swear on Grace's life, I don't know what that paper is. I have never been to Saint Jude’s Memorial. I never had a pregnancy before Grace!"

"The medical record number is registered to your Social Security number," Lena said quietly, reading from her tablet screen after running a back-channel check through her contacts in public health records. "The date is March 14th of last year. You were working as an event coordinator in Chicago then, weren't you?"

Emily went rigid. March 14th. The memory hit her like a physical blow. "I was in the hospital that week. But it wasn't for that! I was involved in a hit-and-run outside my apartment. I was in an induced coma for forty-eight hours. When I woke up, the doctors told me it was severe concussion and internal bruising. The hospital bill was completely paid off by an anonymous charitable trust."

Lena and Daniel exchanged a chilling look.

"Room 404," Lena murmured, her fingers flying over her tablet. "The private wing of Saint Jude’s. It wasn't funded by a public charity. It was an off-the-books research annex endowed exclusively by Richard Whitmore’s private foundation."

Daniel stepped closer, dropping to his knees before Emily. He reached out, his hand trembling as he touched her cheek. "Emily... my father died eight months ago. But if he was tracking you in Chicago months before we met at the charity gala... that means our meeting wasn't an accident. He put you in my path."

"Why?" Emily whispered, tears finally breaking past her eyelashes. "Why would a billionaire orchestrate a relationship between his heir and an ordinary girl from Illinois?"

Lena lowered her camera. Her expression was grave, stripped of her usual cynical bravado. "Because of what happened to Julian Whitmore twenty years ago. The harbor accident wasn't an accident, Daniel. And the woman Julian died trying to protect wasn't a mistress. She was Emily’s mother."
