Chapter 18 - THE FORENSIC MIRAGE

The dawn broke over Manhattan in shades of bruised purple and slate gray.
In the executive offices on the 3rd floor, Lena had three laptops running simultaneous facial recognition sweeps against the hotel’s guest database. Marcus was stationed at the master security hub, coordinating with private security teams sweeping every air duct, electrical closet, and utility riser from the roof to the subway concourse.
Daniel had not slept. His eyes were red-rimmed, his suit rumpled. He stood over Lena’s shoulder, watching the screen cycle through hundreds of headshots of guests checking in for the Centennial Gala.
"Found it," Lena said, slamming her hand on the desk.
The monitor zoomed in on a high-definition frame captured by the lobby elevator cameras at 2:15 AM. A man in an expensive charcoal suit, wearing dark glasses and carrying an oversized leather garment bag, was stepping out of the elevator on the 38th floor.
"Who is he?" Daniel asked.
"Victor Vance," Lena replied, pulling up his background dossier. "Clara’s younger brother. Emily’s uncle."
Daniel felt the ground shift beneath him again. "Emily’s uncle? I thought her mother was an only child."
"That’s what she told Emily," Lena said grimly. "Victor was an explosives technician for a private maritime defense contractor in the Persian Gulf. Dishonorably discharged ten years ago. When Julian went underground, Victor went with him. He’s Julian’s enforcer, Daniel. He was the one who coordinated the hit in the lobby six months ago. And he’s inside the hotel right now."
Before Daniel could respond, his private cell phone buzzed on the glass desk.
The caller ID was unlisted.
Daniel hit speakerphone. "Speak."
*"Good morning, nephew,"* a rough, smoke-cured voice spoke through the line. *"The federal marshals might have Julian in an interrogation room in Brooklyn, but they don't have the detonators."*
"What do you want, Victor?" Daniel demanded, keeping his voice level as Lena signaled Marcus to trace the signal.
*"I want the original stock certificates signed over to the Vance Family Foundation by 8:00 PM tonight, during your opening gala speech,"* Victor said smoothly. *"If I see police cruisers within two blocks of the perimeter, or if you attempt to evacuate the ballroom, I press a single button. I have rigged three industrial sulfur-hexafluoride tanks in the central HVAC intake on the 4th floor. It won't cause an explosion, Daniel. It will displace every cubic foot of oxygen in the Grand Ballroom in under forty seconds. Eight hundred of your most elite guests will suffocate in their black-tie attire before the fire department even reaches the block."*
"Where is Emily?" Daniel roared, cold terror seizing his chest.
*"She’s in the nursery, of course,"* Victor chuckled. *"With the baby. You have twelve hours, Daniel. Protect your family... or protect your empire. Let's see which bloodline you truly belong to."*
The line went dead.
Lena looked up from her screen, her hands shaking slightly. "The trace bounced off three repeaters in the building. He’s transmitting from inside the hotel. But with eight hundred guests arriving and two hundred catering staff, finding him without triggering an evacuation is impossible."
Daniel turned toward the window, looking down at the red carpet where Emily had fallen months ago. His mind raced through every contingency, every law, every drop of blood that had brought them to this precipice.
"We don't evacuate," Daniel said quietly.
Lena stared at him. "Are you insane? He has a chemical weapon in the ventilation system!"

"He wants the gala to happen," Daniel said, turning around, his eyes burning with absolute clarity. "He wants the stage. He wants the world watching when he takes the empire from us. So we give him his stage. But we rewrite the script."
