Chapter 17 - FRACTURED GLASS AND BROKEN VOWS

The tape hissed with static, then the dry, raspy voice of Richard Whitmore filled the vault, sounding as cold and calculating as it had in life.
*"If you are listening to this, Julian, it means you survived the lake, and Daniel has brought you to this room. You always thought you were smarter than me, brother. You thought taking Clara would break me. But Clara never loved you, Julian. She came to me forty-eight hours before you took that boat out on the water."*
Julian’s face drained of color. "Turn it off. It’s a trick. He’s lying!"
*"Clara knew what you were,"* Richard’s voice continued relentlessly from the speaker. *"She knew you had mortgaged the family trust to fund your gambling debts in Macau. She knew you were going to use her family’s land as collateral. She begged me to help her disappear. The hit-and-run on the boat? It wasn't my men who cut the fuel line, Julian. It was Clara."*
"Lies!" Julian roared, lunging toward the pedestal, his cane swinging wildly. Marcus instantly tackled him against the concrete wall, pinning his arms behind his back. "Shut it off! Clara loved me! She died loving me!"
*"I gave Clara five million dollars to change her identity and raise the child in Illinois,"* the tape continued, Richard’s voice laced with bitter satisfaction. *"And I made her sign one irrevocable condition. If Julian Whitmore ever resurfaced to claim the Grand, the daughter would inherit everything—on the condition that Julian never receives a single cent. If Julian attempts to seize control of the corporation, the entire estate is automatically transferred into an irrevocable trust for Emily’s firstborn child. Grace Whitmore."*
The tape ended with a sharp click. Silence descended upon the vault, heavy and suffocating.
Daniel turned slowly, his eyes fixing on the manila envelope inside the lockbox. He reached in, pulled out the folded legal parchment, and read the final codicil of the Harbor Trust.
"He was right," Daniel said, his voice flat. "Julian, you have no claim. You never had one. The moment you filed that federal petition tonight, you triggered the forfeiture clause. The hotel doesn't belong to me. It doesn't belong to you. It belongs entirely to Grace."
Julian struggled against Marcus’s iron grip, his breath ragged, veins bulging along his neck. "She is a baby! She cannot sign contracts! She cannot run a board of directors! A conservator must be appointed by the court!"
"Yes," Lena said, stepping forward with a cold smile. "A conservator. And according to subsection 4B of this document, the sole legal conservator of Grace's estate in the event of disputed lineage is... Emily."
Julian let out a strangled, furious cry, his cane clattering onto the concrete floor.
Emily stepped up to the old man who claimed to be her father. She looked at his twisted, bitter face—a man who had spent twenty years consumed by vengeance, who had sent thugs that nearly killed her and her child, all for a pride he had lost long ago.
"You didn't come back for me," Emily said softly, looking him dead in the eye. "You came back for the building. You are just like Richard. Two brothers tearing apart everything they touch because neither of you could stand someone else having what you wanted."
She turned her back on him, facing Daniel. "Marshal Vance, take this man into federal custody for filing fraudulent court petitions and violation of trust law. Marcus, escort them out."
May you like
"Wait," Julian rasped, his eyes flashing with a desperate, venomous light as Marcus dragged him toward the door. "You think you've won, Daniel? You think your precious little family is safe? Check the hotel registry for tonight! Check who booked the Presidential Suite under the name Henderson! If you don't give me that deed before the gala tomorrow, this whole building burns with eight hundred people inside!"
