Chapter 14 - The Confrontation at the Pier

Julian went rigid on the pier. He looked toward the darkness of the marina access road, realizing with terrifying speed that his narrative was crumbling around him.

“You don't have the stomach to take me down, Nora,” he snarled into the phone. “You bring that box to Slip 44 right now. If you go to the police, I swear to God, Bradley will tie your life up in civil court until you lose custody of Lily. I’ll make sure you don't have a roof over your head or a dime to feed her.”

“Lily isn't your daughter anymore, Julian,” I said. “She’s the one who gave me the match to burn you down.”

I hung up.

“Hit the lights,” Agent Diaz commanded into the radio.

*“GO, GO, GO!”*

Instantly, the dark pier erupted into blazing daylight. High-powered floodlights mounted on police tactical vehicles surged to life, cutting through the sea fog and blinding the dock in blinding white brilliance.

*“STATE POLICE! DON’T MOVE! HANDS IN THE AIR!”*

Sirens wailed in a deafening chorus as two dozen heavily armed tactical officers swarmed the wooden docks from three directions.

Julian spun around, dropping his phone onto the wet boards. He reached into his waistband.

*“DROP THE WEAPON!”* an officer roared.

From the cabin of *The Alibi*, Victoria Sterling stepped out, holding a small semiautomatic pistol. But before she could raise it, a Coast Guard interceptor boat surged out of the dark water, its deck gun trained directly on the yacht’s helm, blue-and-red strobes painting the water in blood-colored light.

“DROP IT!” a voice boomed over the Coast Guard loudspeaker.

Victoria dropped the gun. It clattered against the fiberglass deck. She threw her hands in the air, trembling.

Julian, however, didn't raise his hands.

He stared past the blinding wall of tactical shields, straight toward the surveillance van parked on the pierhead. Even through the glare, he knew I was inside.

He bolted down the narrow finger pier, lunging toward an outboard skiff tied to the dock.

“Target running!”

Marcus Reed emerged from the line of officers like a freight train. He vaulted over a dock cleat, closed the distance in four strides, and tackled Julian mid-leap.

The two men crashed onto the sodden wooden planks with a bone-jarring thud. Julian thrashed, throwing an elbow that caught Marcus across the cheek, but Marcus didn't flinch. He pinned Julian’s right arm behind his back, drove his knee into Julian’s shoulder blades, and wrenched the steel cuffs around his wrists with a sickening, metallic *click*.

“Julian Vance,” Marcus growled into his ear, breathing heavily. “You’re under arrest for attempted capital murder, aggravated arson, and conspiracy to commit fraud.”

The silence that followed was broken only by the lapping of cold salt water against the hull of *The Alibi*.
