Chapter 16 - What Was Left Behind

Unit 412 at the Route 9 Self-Storage facility was opened with the master key an hour later under the glare of halogen work lights.

When the roll-up metal door rattled open, my breath hitched in my throat.

The unit wasn't filled with stolen construction equipment. It was stacked with wardrobe boxes, plastic totes, and furniture blankets.

Julian hadn't just burned our home; he had spent three weeks methodically gutting it of everything of real value while I was at work.

Inside the boxes were my mother’s heirloom silver, my father’s antique watch collection, Lily’s first baby drawings framed in glass, and every photo album from our ten years together.

He had saved the heirlooms so he could sell them or keep them, while leaving me to burn with the empty shell.

“He planned this down to the hour,” Agent Diaz said, shaking her head in disgust as she cataloged the inventory. “He packed the memories he wanted to keep and set fire to the life he wanted to erase.”

“He didn't save these because he cared about the memories,” I said, opening a tote filled with my grandmother’s vintage jewelry. “He saved them because they couldn't be traced by insurance. He was going to pawn my family’s legacy in Europe.”

My phone buzzed in my pocket. It was Claire.

I swiped the screen. “Claire?”

“Nora? Where are you? Is it over?”

“It’s over,” I said, my voice finally cracking as the monumental weight of the day began to collapse onto my shoulders. “He’s in custody. Victoria is in custody. Sheriff Cooper was arrested twenty minutes ago by state troopers.”

Through the phone, I heard Lily’s small voice: “Mommy? Is Daddy going to jail?”

Tears finally spilled over my lashes, hot and cleansing against the freezing night air.

“Yes, baby,” I choked out. “Daddy is going away where he can never, ever hurt us again.”
