Chapter 19 - The Dollhouse Restored

That afternoon, Claire and I sat on the living room floor of the rental cottage we had leased near the lake.
In the center of the room sat the restored dollhouse.
Marcus had taken it to an old woodworker friend in the valley. The scorched shingles had been replaced with fresh cedar shakes. The charred walls had been sanded down, re-stained, and varnished until the oak gleamed with deep honey-gold warmth.
Lily sat cross-legged on the rug, carefully placing tiny wooden furniture into the ground-floor living room.
She picked up a tiny wooden mother doll and placed it on the front porch.
“Mommy?” she asked quietly.
I sat down beside her, crossing my legs. “Yes, baby?”
“Is Daddy ever going to come back?”
The question hung in the air, soft and innocent, but stripped of the terror that had choked her at Gate 14.
I wrapped an arm around her small shoulders, pulling her against my side. “No, sweetheart. Daddy made choices that mean he has to stay far away in a place where he can’t hurt anyone ever again.”
Lily looked down at the dollhouse, running her thumb over the secret roof panel where the lockbox had been hidden.
“I was scared that day,” she whispered. “At the airport. I thought if I told you, Daddy would be mad at me.”
My heart swelled with an overwhelming, ferocious love. I turned her toward me, holding her hands in mine—just like I had on the cold airport floor.
“Being brave doesn't mean you aren't scared, Lily,” I said, looking right into her hazel eyes. “Being brave means you’re terrified, but you speak the truth anyway. You saved my life that day. Do you know that? If you hadn't whispered those words in my ear, I wouldn't be sitting here right now.”
Lily looked up at me, the last shadows of guilt and confusion finally vanishing from her eyes. A bright, proud smile spread across her face.
“We’re a team, right Mommy?”
May you like
“We’re the best team in the world,” I said, kissing her forehead.
