Chapter 5 - The Velvet Predator

*(CHAPTER 5 — REAL MOTIVE)*

Downstairs, the atmosphere in the west wing master suite was spiraling into chaotic hysteria.

Vanessa stood in front of her mirrored vanity, her hands shaking so violently she dropped her compact, shattering the pressed powder across the Persian rug. The silk of her designer gown was stained with dirty water and crushed flower petals. Her meticulously styled hair was coming undone, wild strands sticking to her sweat-sheened forehead.

“We’re ruined!” Vanessa shrieked, whirling around to face her mother. “Did you see the look in his eyes, Eleanor? He wasn't supposed to be here! The storm was supposed to ground all regional flights! Who told him? *Who texted him?!*”

Eleanor Montgomery sat calmly on a velvet chaise lounge, though her tight grip on her highball glass betrayed her inner tension. She took a slow, calculated sip of her drink, her cold, calculating eyes staring at the heavy double doors of the bedroom.

“Pull yourself together, Vanessa,” Eleanor snapped, her voice like cracking ice. “Panicking is for the lower classes. Ethan Vance is a businessman, not a criminal. He won't lay a finger on you. He knows the media would tear him apart if he caused a scandal.”

“You don't know him!” Vanessa cried, pacing the floor like a caged predator. “He threw a three-hundred-pound stone vase across the room! He looked like he wanted to rip my throat out with his bare hands! If he finds out about the offshore debts—if he discovers the six million dollars we borrowed from the syndicate against Clara’s trust—”

“He won't find out anything if you finish the job!” Eleanor hissed, rising from the chaise and grabbing her daughter by the shoulders. “Look at the clock, Vanessa! It’s 11:22 PM! We have thirty-eight minutes!”

“The girl didn't sign!” Vanessa sobbed, her composure entirely fractured. “She bit me! The little monster drew blood!”

“Then we don't need her signature!” Eleanor snarled, pulling a document from a leather briefcase on the desk. “I have the forensic handwriting expert’s replica of Clara’s signature and the child’s practice tracings. We have the affidavit from Dr. Sterling stating the child is suffering from severe acute psychosis and that you are acting in loco parentis to protect her estate. All we need is for the courier to deliver this packet to Judge Harrison’s townhome before midnight!”

The true depth of the Montgomery family’s depravity was laid out on the mahogany desk.

The Montgomerys were entirely bankrupt. The family estate in the Hamptons was already under a secret foreclosure notice. Eleanor’s late husband had left behind massive gambling debts to predatory offshore syndicates, and Vanessa had been hand-picked by her mother as the golden ticket to salvage their dynasty.

Marrying Ethan Vance had provided them with luxury, an unlimited credit card allowance, and social standing. But Ethan was notoriously meticulous with his wealth. He had placed his core corporate holdings into Clara’s pre-existing irrevocable trust, making it impossible for Vanessa to touch the principal capital.

Vanessa was merely a decorated passenger on Ethan’s ship. She owned nothing. She controlled nothing.

The only way to take the ship was mutiny.

For two years, Vanessa and Eleanor had systematically gathered psychological ammunition. They had paid Dr. Sterling, a disgraced former board member of the State Psychiatric Association who was drowning in debt himself, twenty thousand dollars a month to draft fraudulent medical evaluations diagnosing Lily with severe childhood schizophrenia and violent tendencies.

The dog chain. The public humiliation tonight. It was all meant to be the crowning piece of evidence.

Vanessa was going to claim that Lily had suffered a violent breakdown during the party, attacking guests and attempting to hurt herself, forcing Vanessa to use physical restraint to save the child’s life. The video Eleanor had recorded was supposed to be edited and presented to Judge Harrison to prove that Lily was an uncontrollable danger to herself and society.

Once Lily was committed to a secure private asylum, Vanessa would be granted full conservatorship over the Laurent Trust. She would control the 45% stake in Vance Global.

And Ethan?

Ethan would be marginalized, broken by the public scandal of having an insane daughter, and eventually pushed out of his own boardroom.

“Get the courier on the phone,” Eleanor commanded, thrusting the briefcase into Vanessa’s hands. “Tell him to meet us at the service entrance behind the conservatory. Once the seal is stamped by Harrison, it won't matter if Ethan is in the house. He will be legally powerless to stop us.”

Vanessa wiped her running mascara, drawing in a sharp, ragged breath. A twisted, desperate resolve hardened in her eyes.

“You’re right,” Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling with manic excitement. “He can't touch me. The law is on my side. I am still his wife. I am still the lady of this house.”

She reached for the handle of the bedroom door.

Before her fingers could touch the polished brass, the heavy oak door blew inward with the force of a battering ram.

Vanessa screamed, leaping backward as the splintered wood flew across the room.

Framed in the doorway stood Ethan Vance.

Behind him stood four men in tactical security uniforms, led by Marcus Brody, along with Julian, who held his iPad firmly in front of his chest.

Ethan stepped over the broken door frame, his eyes black pools of absolute, unforgiving retribution.

“You’re not the lady of this house, Vanessa,” Ethan said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper that froze the air in the room. “You’re a trespasser. And your thirty-eight minutes just ran out.”
