Chapter 9 - The Choice

*(CHAPTER 9 — THE CHOICE)*

The grand foyer of the Vance estate was dead silent save for the dripping of rain from the opened double doors.

Vanessa and Eleanor were being held under armed guard near the base of the grand mahogany staircase. Vanessa sat slumped against the balustrade, her face ruined by running mascara, her stained crimson dress pooling around her feet like dried blood. Eleanor, however, remained rigid, her cold, predatory eyes scanning the entryway for any possible escape route.

At the foot of the stairs stood Arthur Sterling, who had just been brought in by two state troopers after being intercepted at his private clinic attempting to wipe his electronic medical servers.

When Ethan descended the stairs, flanked by Brody and Detective Reynolds, the room grew impossibly colder.

“Ethan,” Eleanor spoke up, her voice regaining a desperate, venomous cadence. “Before you make a catastrophic mistake, you need to think about the consequences.”

Ethan stopped on the bottom step, looking down at the older woman with dead, unblinking eyes. “The consequences for whom, Eleanor?”

“For Vance Global!” Eleanor snapped, taking a step forward until an officer’s hand firmly pressed against her shoulder, forcing her back. “Think about the stock price, you fool! If this gets out—if the public finds out that your wife was drugging your daughter, that there is an investigation into the Laurent Trust, that your family was a cesspool of scandal—your stock will plummet by forty percent by tomorrow morning! The board of directors will hold an emergency vote of no confidence! You will lose your position as CEO!”

Eleanor leaned forward, her eyes gleaming with the desperate gambit of a cornered snake.

“We can handle this quietly, Ethan,” she whispered urgently. “A quiet, private divorce. Vanessa will sign an NDA. We will surrender every claim to Clara’s trust. We will leave the country tonight. You keep your empire. You keep your reputation. You keep your daughter. No scandal. No media. No ruined stock. That is the smart choice. That is the businessman’s choice.”

Vanessa looked up, a glimmer of desperate hope flashing in her swollen eyes. “Yes, Ethan... please. For the company. Think about everything you built. You can't throw away a multi-billion-dollar empire just to punish us!”

The room fell into an agonizing silence.

Detective Reynolds glanced at Ethan, waiting. Brody stepped back, his face neutral, knowing that the financial stakes Eleanor described were terrifyingly real. A public scandal of this magnitude could easily wipe out billions in market capitalization and trigger endless shareholder lawsuits.

Ethan had spent fifteen years building Vance Global. He had sacrificed sleep, health, and his own youth to construct that empire.

Vanessa and Eleanor believed they knew Ethan Vance. They believed he was a creature of cold calculation, a man who worshiped balance sheets and boardrooms above all else. They believed that when presented with the choice between justice and wealth, the billionaire would always choose the wealth.

Ethan stood motionless on the stairs.

Slowly, his hand reached into his breast pocket. He pulled out his executive corporate smartphone.

He unlocked the screen, dialed a number, and put the phone on speakerphone.

The call connected on the second ring.

“Mr. Vance?” the voice of Harrison Vance-Cole, Chairman of the Vance Global Board of Directors, sounded through the speaker. “Ethan, what is going on? We’re seeing rumors popping up on social media about an incident at the estate—”

“Harrison,” Ethan interrupted, his voice echoing clearly across the grand foyer. “I am calling to tender my immediate and irrevocable resignation as Chief Executive Officer of Vance Global Technologies, effective this very second.”

Vanessa let out a strangled gasp. Eleanor’s mouth fell open in utter, paralyzed disbelief.

“Ethan, are you insane?!” Harrison shouted over the phone. “You can't resign! The market opens in eight hours!”

“Appoint Marcus Brody as interim CEO,” Ethan continued calmly, never taking his eyes off Eleanor’s horrified face. “Instruct corporate legal to release all unredacted police reports, financial forensic audits, and surveillance footage directly to the Associated Press and the Securities and Exchange Commission at midnight. I want every crime committed in this house laid bare under the sun.”

“Ethan, the stock will crash!” Harrison pleaded.

“Then let it crash,” Ethan said softly. “I spent two years guarding the stock price while my daughter was bleeding in the dark. Vance Global is just glass and paper. My daughter is flesh and blood.”

Ethan ended the call.

He slipped the phone back into his pocket, took the final step off the staircase, and stood directly in front of Eleanor Montgomery.

“You thought my empire was my armor, Eleanor,” Ethan whispered, his voice vibrating with absolute, terrifying finality. “You thought I would sacrifice my child to protect my money. You don't know what a father is. And tonight, you’re going to learn what happens when you take away everything a father has left to lose.”

Ethan turned to Detective Reynolds.
