Chapter 1 - The Edge of Eternity

"GET OUT OF MY WAY!"

Victoria’s piercing shriek ripped through the laughter of three hundred rooftop wedding guests like a serrated blade.

Before anyone could process the fury in her voice, Victoria slammed both hands into Eleanor’s fragile shoulders.

Seventy-year-old Eleanor had no time to brace herself.

She had no warning, no defense, and no chance to fight back.

Her heirloom pearl earrings caught the harsh glare of the midday sun as her frail body flipped violently over the low concrete parapet.

Her cream-colored lace dress whipped into the fierce downdraft of the sixty-story penthouse tower.

A collective gasp choked the terrace into dead silence.

Eleanor’s terrified scream spiraled downward into the abyss between the glass high-rises.

For one paralyzing second, the entire rooftop stood frozen in disbelief.

Victoria remained standing at the ledge, her fuchsia designer gown fluttering against her calves.

At fifty-five, she was a celebrated socialite, polished, glamorous, and accustomed to commanding every room she entered.

Yet the mask of high-society elegance was completely gone.

Her eyes were bloodshot, her lips pulled back in a feral snarl of raw murderous intent.

Just six feet away, a thirty-year-old hotel maid named Maya was holding an antique silver champagne tray.

The heavy tray slipped from Maya’s trembling hands and crashed onto the polished Italian tile.

Crystal champagne flutes exploded into blinding shards of glass and foaming wine.

"Oh my God!" Maya screamed, abandoning her cart and sprinting toward the edge.

She reached the concrete perimeter wall, slammed her chest against the stone, and peered into the void.

Her stomach plunged as her heart leaped straight into her throat.

Eleanor was dangling fifty stories above the pavement, suspended only because a heavy silk pleat of her dress had snagged on an iron maintenance bracket bolted into the concrete facade.

The fabric was already groaning under the strain, threads snapping with audible pops against the howl of the wind.

"HELP ME!" Eleanor sobbed, her thin hands clawing frantically at the smooth exterior glass.

Maya threw her upper body over the edge without hesitating for a single breath.

"Give me your hand!" Maya yelled, stretching her arm down until her shoulder joints burned.

Eleanor reached upward with shaking fingers.

Their knuckles grazed.

The wind battered Eleanor’s sleeve, causing her hand to slip away into empty air.

Maya lunged deeper over the concrete edge, her knees leaving the terrace floor.

She grabbed a handful of embroidered silk and locked her fingers around Eleanor’s frail wrist.

The sudden, violent deadweight nearly pulled Maya headfirst over the seventy-foot ledge.

Her white lace maid cap ripped free and vanished into the city skyline below.

Her lavender uniform scraped against the abrasive stone, shredding the fabric at her elbows.

Pain flared through Maya’s arms, but she locked her jaw and refused to loosen her fingers.

"I’VE GOT YOU!" Maya roared over the gale-force gusts. "DO NOT LET GO!"

Eleanor’s silver curls whipped across her pale face as she looked down at the miniature yellow taxicabs creeping along the street below.

"Maya, please! I don’t want to die like this!"

Maya dug her work shoes into the base of the parapet, veins bulging in her neck.

"You are not going to die today! Look at me, Eleanor! Look at my eyes!"

Behind Maya, the sharp click of stiletto heels tapped rapidly against the terrace pavers.

Victoria was marching toward the edge.

For a fleeting fraction of a second, Maya prayed the wealthy woman had come to her senses to assist in the rescue.

That fragile hope died instantly.

Victoria reached down with manic strength and clamped both hands over Maya’s forearms.

"LET HER GO!" Victoria hissed through clenched teeth.

Maya stared up into Victoria’s crazed eyes in sheer horror.

"What are you doing? Help me pull her up!"

"I said let her go, you miserable insect!"

Victoria dug her manicured nails deep into the flesh of Maya’s wrists, gouging skin until bright red droplets welled beneath the pressure.

Maya screamed in agony as Victoria used her full body weight to wrench Maya’s hands off Eleanor’s wrist.

"SOMEBODY HELP US! SHE IS TRYING TO KILL HER!" Maya shrieked toward the crowd.

The wedding guests were clustering at the terrace threshold, frozen in confusion and terror.

Hundreds of dignitaries, business tycoons, and old-money families were dressed to celebrate Daniel’s triumphant wedding.

Instead, they were watching a nightmare unfold under the bright noon sun.

A seventy-year-old grandmother was hanging outside the skyscraper.

And the mother of the bride was physically trying to tear away the only hand keeping her from plunging to the pavement.

Maya twisted her torso, throwing her hip against the stone wall to block Victoria’s leverage.

"GET YOUR HANDS OFF ME!" Maya spat, fighting through the blinding pain in her shredded wrists.

Victoria pulled harder, her designer face twisted into an ugly mask of desperation.

"You stupid little hotel servant! You have no idea what you're destroying!"

Maya’s grip slipped by half an inch.

Below the parapet, another seam in Eleanor’s dress tore with the sound of a pistol shot.

Eleanor let out a weak, breathless whimper as her body dropped several inches.

"Please," Eleanor whispered, her strength rapidly evaporating. "Daniel... my son..."

Maya’s forearm muscles burned like liquid fire.

She knew she had less than ten seconds before her grip gave out completely.

Suddenly, the heavy glass double doors of the penthouse ballroom were kicked open with explosive force.

"MOM!"

Daniel, thirty-four years old, bounded across the open terrace like a man possessed.

He was dressed in a tailored navy tuxedo, his white silk boutonniere flapping wildly in the wind.

Two burly private security officers followed closely behind him.

Daniel took in the entire catastrophic tableau in a single heartbeat.

His mother was suspended over the abyss.

A young maid was bleeding from the wrists while holding her.

And his future mother-in-law was actively trying to break that hold.

Every ounce of blood drained from Daniel’s face, replaced by a volcanic surge of adrenaline.

"MOM! HOLD ON!" Daniel roared, throwing himself onto the rough concrete edge beside Maya.

One of the security officers grabbed Eleanor’s other arm while Daniel hooked both of his powerful arms under his mother’s shoulders.

"I have you, Mom! Look at my face, I’ve got you!" Daniel cried, his voice cracking with emotion.

Eleanor looked up through a curtain of tears, her lips blue from cold and shock.

"Daniel... my boy..."

"Don't look at the ground! Look right into my eyes!"

The second security guard shoved himself between Victoria and the rescuers, slamming his broad chest into her path.

"Ma'am, STEP BACK RIGHT NOW!"

Victoria lunged forward, trying to slap the guard’s face.

"Get your filthy hands off me! Do you have any idea who my family is?"

"I SAID STEP BACK!" the guard commanded, physically driving her backward against a decorative marble pillar.

Daniel tuned out the shouting, focusing every ounce of strength in his back and legs.

His mother was light, but the wind resistance and the awkward angle made her feel like lead.

"On three! PULL!" Daniel yelled.

Daniel, Maya, and the guard pulled together with all their might.

For one sickening half-second, Eleanor’s shoe caught the lower lip of the parapet, threatening to dislodge their grip.

Eleanor shrieked in terror.

"NOT TODAY!" Daniel bellowed, wrenching upward with sheer desperation.

With a heavy scrape of fabric and stone, Eleanor was hoisted over the low barrier and dragged onto the safety of the terrace floor.

Daniel wrapped himself around his mother, collapsing against the stone and weeping into her silver hair.

Maya rolled onto her back, panting frantically, her bloody hands shaking uncontrollably against her chest.

The terrace fell into an eerie, suffocating silence, broken only by Eleanor’s ragged gasps for air.

Daniel pressed his forehead against his mother’s cold cheek.

"Mom, can you hear me? Are you broken anywhere? Speak to me."

Eleanor clung to the lapels of his tuxedo, her entire body shuddering with convulsive shivers.

"I thought... I was gone... Daniel, she pushed me..."

Daniel gently closed his eyes, inhaling the scent of her lavender perfume, before turning his head toward Victoria.

Victoria was smoothing the front of her fuchsia dress, her eyes darting nervously toward the terrace doors.

The smug arrogance had vanished, replaced by the twitching panic of a cornered predator.

Daniel stood up slowly, towering over the scene.

His voice was deathly quiet, carrying an icy edge that silenced the whispering onlookers.

"You tried to murder my mother."

Victoria held up two trembling hands in false surrender.

"Daniel, you have to listen to reason, this was a tragic misunderstanding."

Daniel took a heavy step toward her, his fists clenched tight.

"YOU PUSHED HER OVER A SIXTY-STORY ROOF!"

Several socialites in the front row flinched backward.

Victoria pointed an accusing finger at Eleanor.

"She had an episode! She lost her footing, Daniel! I lunged forward to catch her dress, but that hysterical maid misunderstood what she was seeing!"

Maya pushed herself up from the floor, leaning heavily against the railing.

"THAT IS A COMPLETE LIE!" Maya cried, stepping forward despite her battered knees.

All eyes snapped to the young housemaid.

"I saw everything from three feet away," Maya said with unwavering clarity. "She grabbed Mrs. Eleanor by the collar, yelled in her face, and shoved her backward with both hands. And when I tried to pull her up, she tried to peel my fingers off so she would plummet!"

Victoria’s face twisted into an expression of pure, venomous hatred.

"You insolent little pauper! You’re inventing stories to extort my family!"

"That’s enough!" Daniel’s voice cracked like thunder across the terrace.

Victoria turned on her heel to make a break for the interior elevators.

The second security officer stepped directly into her path, grabbing both of her wrists and twisting them behind her back.

"Release me this instant!" Victoria shrieked, kicking against the guard’s shins.

Daniel walked directly up to Maya, his eyes dark with gratitude and rage.

"Did you see her do it intentionally, Maya? On your life?"

Maya raised her arm and pointed toward the underside of the overhead architectural beam.

A high-definition security camera with a glowing red indicator light was pointed directly at the spot where Eleanor had gone over.

"You don't need to take my word for anything, Mr. Vance," Maya said calmly. "The penthouse security feed records in 4K audio and video. Check the camera."

Victoria stopped thrashing instantly.

The color fled from her lips, leaving her skin the shade of wet ash.

The arrogance that had defined her entire public persona evaporated in a single second.

Daniel followed Maya’s finger to the black camera lens, then looked back at Victoria’s hollow eyes.

"You forgot about the venue cameras, didn't you, Victoria?"

Victoria’s jaw worked silently, but no sound escaped her throat.

"Look at me and answer me!" Daniel demanded.

Her chest rose and fell in rapid, shallow breaths.

Daniel signaled to the security chief.

"Lock her in the private security office downstairs, call the precinct immediately, and place an armed guard on the security control room. Nobody touches that hard drive."

"Yes, Mr. Vance," the guard replied, shoving Victoria toward the service exit.

Victoria suddenly began crying, her voice dropping to a desperate whine.

"Daniel, please, think of the family! Think of our social standing! We can settle this behind closed doors!"

Daniel looked at her with pure revulsion.

"Behind closed doors? You tried to smash my mother onto the concrete sixty floors below. There are no doors thick enough to save you from where you're going."

Victoria’s eyes darted toward the bridal suite entrance, a flicker of raw panic passing across her features.

Daniel caught the movement instantly.

Before he could interrogate her further, a fragile hand seized his navy jacket sleeve.

"Daniel..."

The whisper was so weak it barely reached his ears.

Daniel dropped to his knees beside Eleanor, gently lifting her head.

"Mom, stay still. The paramedics are coming up the freight elevator right now."

Eleanor shook her head weakly, tears washing away the bridal powder on her cheeks.

"No, Daniel... you have to listen to me right now... while I still have breath."

There was something far more terrifying in his mother’s eyes than the memory of the fall.

It was the devastating look of a parent who had discovered a truth that would destroy her child’s soul.

Eleanor pulled him down until his ear was millimeters from her cracked lips.

"Mom, what is it? What did she say to you before she pushed you?"

Eleanor’s voice trembled with unbearable agony.

"I heard them... in the dressing room before the ceremony... plotting it all."

Victoria screamed from across the terrace as the guard forced her through the exit doors.

"DON’T LISTEN TO HER, DANIEL! SHE IS SICK! SHE IS INSANE!"

Daniel ignored the screams, his entire body going rigid.

"Plotting what, Mom? Who were you listening to?"

Eleanor’s tears soaked into Daniel’s lapel.

She tightened her weak grip on his coat, her voice dropping into a raspy, horrific whisper that seemed to freeze the very air in Daniel’s lungs.

"Your bride ordered her to do it."

Daniel stopped breathing.

The roar of the wind, the murmur of the crowd, the distant wail of sirens—everything ceased to exist.

His bride?

Sophia?

The sweet, soft-spoken woman who had spent the last two years holding his hand through every business triumph?

The woman who had helped his mother pick out her heirloom gardenias just yesterday?

Daniel slowly straightened his spine, staring into the middle distance.

Through the tinted glass doors of the bridal suite across the corridor, a lone figure stood in absolute stillness.

A silhouette adorned in an ivory lace gown and a sweeping cathedral veil.

May you like

Sophia was standing there behind the glass, holding her white bouquet, watching the aftermath with cold, unblinking composure.

Daniel rose from the floor, his fists shaking with a lethal mixture of heartbreak and fury, and began walking toward the bride who had just ordered his mother’s execution.
