Chapter 4 - The Web of Deceit

The grand ballroom on the fifty-fifth floor was a sea of confusion and whispered hysteria.
Three hundred elite guests in designer tuxedos and shimmering evening gowns were huddled around the open bar, their murmurs bouncing off the gilded chandeliers.
Catering staff were quietly clearing untouched plates of poached salmon and filet mignon.
At the front of the ballroom, standing near the floral archway where the vows were supposed to take place, stood Julian Mercer.
Julian was thirty-four, impeccably groomed, wearing a midnight-blue tuxedo identical to Daniel’s.
He was holding a glass of bourbon, calmly reassuring a group of senior board members that the incident upstairs was merely a minor medical issue with Mrs. Vance.
"Everything is under control, gentlemen," Julian was saying with a smooth, comforting smile. "Eleanor simply felt faint from the midday heat. Daniel is seeing to her personal comfort, and the ceremony will proceed shortly."
The heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom slammed open, the decorative brass handles vibrating against the walls.
Daniel strode down the center aisle, his eyes locked onto his best man like a laser sight.
Maya and Detective Miller flanked him on either side, followed by four armed police officers whose boots echoed rhythmically across the hardwood floor.
The room instantly fell into a dead hush.
The wealthy socialites parted like the Red Sea as Daniel marched toward the altar.
Julian’s practiced smile wavered for a split second, his fingers tightening around his bourbon glass until the ice cubes clinked sharply.
"Daniel!" Julian called out, stepping forward with an outstretched hand and an expression of profound relief. "Thank God you're down here. How is your mother? The rumors circulating among the guests are absolutely wild."
Daniel didn't slow his stride.
He closed the distance between them in four seconds.
Instead of taking Julian’s hand, Daniel grabbed Julian by his satin lapels and slammed him backward against the wooden framework of the floral arch.
White gardenias and pink roses showered down around them as the heavy structure groaned under the impact.
Several female guests screamed, dropping their champagne glasses.
"Daniel, what the hell are you doing?" Julian choked out, his face turning crimson as Daniel’s thumbs pressed into his collarbone. "Have you lost your mind?"
"Avernus Capital, Julian," Daniel said, his voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom.
Julian’s eyes widened in sudden, naked panic.
"What... what are you talking about?"
"Sixty million dollars on my mother's life," Daniel said, leaning in until his breath washed over Julian’s face. "Brokered fourteen months ago by Mercer Financial Solutions. Signed by you. Witnessed by Sophia."
The color drained from Julian’s face, leaving him looking hollow and sickly under the warm chandelier light.
"Daniel... let me explain... you don't understand the pressures we were under—"
"You sold my mother to a family of grifters!" Daniel roared, shaking Julian violently against the wooden arch. "You introduced me to Sophia! You set up the logistics contracts that bled my company dry! You spent twenty years calling me your brother while you were measuring my mother for a coffin!"
Detective Miller stepped up, placing a firm hand on Daniel’s shoulder.
"Daniel, let him go. Let us do our jobs."
Daniel held on for three more agonizing seconds, his knuckles white, before shoving Julian away with such force that the man stumbled over a decorative urn.
Julian fell to one knee, panting for breath, his polished demeanor completely disintegrated.
The guests around the perimeter began gasping as the reality of the situation washed over them.
Whispers of 'murder,' 'fraud,' and 'insurance scheme' rippled through the elite crowd like wildfire.
Julian slowly pushed himself up from the floor, wiping a streak of sweat from his forehead.
The panic on his face suddenly curdled into something dark, bitter, and resentful.
"You think you earned any of this, Daniel?" Julian spat, adjusting his torn lapel with trembling hands. "Your father inherited Vance Logistics from his father! You stepped into the chief executive role like a prince inheriting a kingdom, while my father worked eighty hours a week in your family’s warehouses until his heart exploded!"
Daniel stared at the man he thought he knew better than anyone on earth.
"My father paid for your entire Ivy League education, Julian. He treated you like his own flesh and blood."
"He treated me like a well-fed servant!" Julian snarled, his voice rising to an ugly screech. "He left me five percent of the voting shares! Five percent! After thirty years of my family breaking their backs for the Vance name!"
"So you partnered with Victoria and Sophia to murder my mother and take the rest?" Daniel asked, his voice filled with profound sorrow and disgust.
Julian sneered, glancing toward the ballroom exits.
"Sophia was a professional. She targeted four other tech heirs in Europe before I brought her to you. The playbook was flawless. We drain your company’s cash flow, force you into debt with our dummy lenders, marry you to Sophia, and then eliminate the only person who held the original trust covenants—your mother."
Maya stepped forward, her voice cutting through Julian’s rant with sharp moral clarity.
"You forgot that real people have souls, Mr. Mercer. You treated an innocent grandmother like an entry in an accounting ledger."
Julian glared at Maya with pure disdain.
"Shut your mouth, you peasant. You ruined a hundred-million-dollar acquisition because you couldn't mind your own business."
"No," Detective Miller said, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "She saved a woman's life and exposed a cabal of sociopaths. Julian Mercer, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate grand larceny, and insurance fraud."
Miller stepped forward with the cuffs, but Julian’s eyes flicked to the left.
With sudden, desperate speed, Julian kicked a heavy brass serving stand directly into Miller’s shins.
The metal crashed against the detective's leg, causing Miller to stumble.
Julian spun on his heel and sprinted toward the private service corridor behind the catering kitchen.
"STOP HIM!" Miller shouted, drawing his weapon as he limped forward.
Julian shoved through the swinging aluminum kitchen doors, knocking over a tray of hot soup.
Daniel took off in pursuit, his athletic build closing the gap instantly.
Maya was right behind him, knowing the layout of the back corridors better than any of them.
Julian burst into the dimly lit service hallway, sprinting toward the freight elevator that led to the basement.
He slammed his fist against the call button, but the digital display showed the car was grounded on the lobby floor.
"Damn it!" Julian cursed, turning toward the heavy fire escape door marked 'Helipad Access - Authorized Personnel Only.'
Julian threw his shoulder against the panic bar and bounded up the metal stairs.
Daniel tore through the fire door just behind him, the clang of dress shoes on steel steps echoing through the concrete stairwell.
"There's nowhere to go, Julian!" Daniel shouted as they climbed past the sixtieth floor. "The police have the entire block surrounded!"
May you like
Julian didn't answer; he kept climbing, driven by blind, manic desperation.
He kicked open the heavy roof access door, emerging onto the windy, open-air helipad perched at the very summit of the skyscraper.
