Chapter 7 - The Hospital Infiltration

The black unmarked police cruiser tore through the rain-slicked afternoon streets, its hidden red-and-blue strobes flashing violently behind the radiator grille.

Detective Miller drove with ruthless precision, dodging gridlocked traffic across four lanes while sirens echoed between the towering concrete canyons of the financial district.

Daniel sat in the passenger seat with his hands gripping the dashboard, his eyes fixed on the illuminated digital clock on the instrument panel.

Twelve minutes had elapsed since Arthur Vance’s chilling phone call terminated in the skyscraper maintenance shaft.

Maya sat in the rear seat, her bandaged hands methodically checking the contact lists and encrypted file directories on Julian Mercer’s recovered satellite phone.

“There’s an encrypted calendar invitation stamped for fourteen-hundred hours today,” Maya announced, leaning forward between the front bucket seats.

“It lists an anonymous account labeled 'Orpheus-9' with access privileges to the medical telemetry system at St. Jude’s Hospital,” she continued.

“Orpheus was the operational code name Julian used when establishing the phantom reinsurance policies through Avernus Capital,” Miller said, swerving hard around an idling delivery truck.

“Arthur isn’t sending a team of gunmen with automatic rifles into a public hospital,” Daniel realized, his heart hammering against his ribs like a sledgehammer.

“He’s using a medical assassin to make her death look like post-traumatic heart failure from the rooftop fall.”

The cruiser skidded around the corner of Tenth Avenue, coming to a sliding halt directly across the ambulance bay of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital.

The facility was a sprawling fifteen-story medical complex constructed of reflective green glass and white masonry, its entrance crowded with emergency personnel and curious bystanders.

Daniel didn't wait for Miller to set the parking brake; he threw open the passenger door and sprinted across the wet asphalt toward the sliding emergency room doors.

“Vance, wait for backup!” Miller yelled, unholstering his firearm and breaking into a full sprint right behind him, with Maya trailing closely in their wake.

Daniel burst into the bright, sterile lobby, the sharp scent of antiseptic and floor polish hitting him like a physical blow.

He ignored the receptionist shouting behind the triage desk and took the service elevators toward the eighth-floor critical intensive care ward.

When the elevator doors parted on the eighth floor, Daniel’s worst fears materialized in the silent, fluorescent-lit corridor.

Two uniformed metropolitan police officers who had been assigned to guard Eleanor’s room were slumped against the wall beside Room 812, their bodies completely motionless.

Miller rushed forward, dropping to one knee to press his fingers against the neck of the nearest officer.

“They’re breathing, but their pulses are dangerously slow,” Miller hissed, picking up a discarded paper coffee cup lying on the floor.

“Laced with a heavy narcotic sedative; whoever did this walked right past them without firing a single shot.”

Daniel kicked open the heavy door to Room 812 with a thunderous crash that shattered the quiet of the private recovery suite.

Inside, seventy-year-old Eleanor Vance lay pale and fragile beneath thin hospital sheets, her eyes closed, her chest rising and falling beneath a nasal cannula.

Standing over the IV medication manifold beside her bed was a tall man wearing sterile blue surgical scrubs, a white lab coat, and latex gloves.

He was holding a pre-filled ten-milliliter syringe loaded with an oily, translucent liquid, his thumb hovering directly above the plunger as he prepared to inject it into Eleanor’s primary port.

“GET AWAY FROM HER!” Daniel roared, crossing the room in two massive strides and launching his entire body weight into the intruder.

The assassin was knocked off balance, the syringe flying from his hand and clattering against the polished tile floor before rolling under Eleanor’s bed.

The two men crashed into a stainless steel medical tray, sending surgical clamps, saline vials, and electronic monitors crashing down in a deafening metallic cacophony.

The attacker recovered with terrifying speed, demonstrating the lethal reflexes of a professionally trained operative rather than a medical practitioner.

He drove a stiff palm strike directly into Daniel’s chest, fracturing the groom’s breath and throwing him backward into the bedside privacy partition.

The assassin drew a ceramic-bladed tactical knife from the pocket of his lab coat, the non-metallic edge designed to pass undetected through hospital security scanners.

Before the assassin could bring the blade down toward Daniel’s throat, Maya lunged forward from the doorway, swinging a heavy chrome oxygen tank with both hands.

The solid metal cylinder struck the assassin’s shoulder with a sickening thud, knocking him sideways and deflecting the downward arc of the lethal blade.

The knife slashed deep into the mattress inches from Eleanor’s shoulder, tearing the foam and linen wide open.

Eleanor’s eyes fluttered open in terror, her fragile voice crying out in confusion as she recognized her son struggling on the floor beside her.

“Daniel!” Eleanor sobbed, her fingers clutching at the bedsheets as the chaotic violence erupted across her recovery room.

Miller entered the room with his sidearm leveled at center mass, his voice booming with authority.

“DROP THE BLADE OR I WILL BLOW YOUR HEAD OFF!” Miller screamed.

The assassin didn't surrender; he kicked the heavy metal bedside table directly into Miller’s knees, knocking the detective’s weapon off target as a shot fired harmlessly into the acoustical ceiling tiles.

Daniel surged up from the floor, wrapping his arm around the assassin’s throat in a suffocating chokehold while driving his knees into the small of the man's back.

The intruder thrash violently, attempting to reverse the blade into Daniel’s ribs, but Maya seized a heavy IV drip pole and jammed it across the attacker’s wrist, pinning his weapon arm against the wall.

Miller recovered instantly, closing the distance and delivering a devastating blow with the steel butt of his service weapon against the side of the assassin’s skull.

The man’s body went instantly limp, the ceramic blade slipping from his fingers as he collapsed unconscious onto the linoleum floor.

Daniel knelt beside the fallen killer, gasping for air, his wedding shirt ripped to ribbons and his knuckles coated in crimson abrasions.

Miller immediately cuffed the unconscious attacker to the steel plumbing pipe beneath the wall-mounted sink, then grabbed the discarded syringe from beneath Eleanor’s bed.

“Concentrated potassium chloride,” Miller said grimly, inspecting the markings on the barrel. “Two milliliters into her central line would have caused fatal arrhythmia within ninety seconds, leaving almost no trace on a standard post-mortem toxicological screen.”

Daniel rushed to his mother’s bedside, collapsing onto his knees and gathering her trembling, bruised hands into his own.

“Mom, look at me,” Daniel choked out, his voice cracking with overwhelming emotion as tears finally broke through his hardened gaze.

Eleanor reached up with her frail, IV-bruised fingers, gently touching the deep laceration along Daniel’s jawline.

“I told you he was coming, Daniel,” Eleanor whispered, her breathing shallow and labored as her monitor beeped in frantic rhythm.

“He’s been here all along, watching every move we made since your father’s funeral.”

Miller searched the unconscious assassin's pockets, pulling out a laminated false hospital identity card and a sleek black satellite transponder.

“This isn't a local contract killer,” Miller said, examining the encryption stamps on the assassin’s personal device.

“This man carries credentials belonging to a private maritime security syndicate registered in Singapore.”

Maya stepped toward the bed, gently adjusting Eleanor’s oxygen mask and checking the flow of the saline IV bag to ensure no contaminated fluids had entered the tubing.

“He didn't come to negotiate,” Maya murmured, her eyes dark with realization. “He came to eliminate everyone who knows the corporate registry codes for the offshore fleets.”

Eleanor looked at Daniel, her eyes wide with a terrifying clarity that defied her physical trauma.

“Daniel, listen to me very carefully,” Eleanor urged, pulling his face down toward her lips.

“The registry codes for Vance Global’s entire international fleet aren't stored in our downtown server farm.”

Daniel frowned, leaning closer. “Where are they, Mom?”

May you like

“They are stored in the private maritime safe aboard the cargo vessel *Prometheus*, anchored at Pier 17,” Eleanor gasped, her voice trembling with urgent desperation.

“Arthur doesn't just want to steal the corporate wealth, Daniel; he has rigged the vessel with demolition charges to destroy the physical evidence of his十年-long smuggling ring before fleeing international waters tonight!”
