Chapter 7 - The Brink of Destruction

While Ethan was securing the evidence, the Vance penthouse was unraveling into a war zone.

Clara had returned that afternoon, accompanied by her attorney, to finalize the inventory of their shared assets. Nathan stood in the study, his face gaunt, his eyes hollowed out with exhaustion, watching the woman he loved systematically divide ten years of life into neat piles of folders.

"The lake house is yours," Nathan said, his voice barely audible. "The accounts are yours. Clara, take everything. I don't care about the money. Just please... tell me you don't hate me."

Clara stopped packing a box of architectural sketches they had drawn together during their honeymoon in Florence. She looked at him, her eyes shining with unshed tears, her jaw trembling with controlled agony.

"I don't hate you, Nathan," she said, her voice like cracking glass. "I pity you. You allowed a single moment of weakness to surrender everything we built. You are sacrificing us for a woman who looks at you like a paycheck, and you call it honor."

"I am protecting an innocent child!" Nathan shouted, his composure shattering as he slammed his fist against the desk. "Do you think I want this? Do you think I want to wake up in a bed that isn't ours? I wake up every morning wishing I hadn't opened my eyes! But there is a baby coming into this world, Clara! A baby that carries my DNA! What kind of man would I be if I walked away from my own son?"

At that moment, Vanessa walked into the study, wearing an emerald-green silk dress that clung to the contour of her prosthetic bump. She placed an arrogant hand on Nathan’s shoulder, staring directly at Clara with predatory triumph.

"It’s time for you to finish up, Clara," Vanessa said sweetly. "All this screaming is raising my cortisol levels. Nathan’s son doesn't need to absorb your bitterness."

Clara looked at Vanessa’s hand resting on Nathan’s shoulder. She looked at Nathan, who stood frozen, unable to push Vanessa away because he believed he was protecting his child.

"You deserve each other," Clara whispered, picking up the final box. "Sign the papers today, Nathan. If you don't, my lawyer will file a petition for contested divorce on grounds of adultery on Monday morning. I am done."

She turned and walked toward the elevator.

Nathan collapsed into his desk chair, burying his face in his hands, his breath coming in ragged, suffocating sobs. He had reached the absolute bottom. His life was destroyed. His marriage was ash.

Vanessa smiled, a silent, vicious victory curving her painted lips. She pulled Nathan’s head toward her abdomen, stroking his hair with cold condescension. "It’s over, darling. It's just you, me, and the baby now. Everything is going to be perfect."

The elevator doors chimed open.

Ethan stepped into the foyer. He was not wearing his surgical scrubs. He wore a crisp black suit. In his hand, he carried a leather portfolio. And pinned to the lapel of his blazer was a single, three-inch brass tailoring pin—long, needle-sharp, and gleaming under the chandelier.

Ethan looked at Clara, who was waiting for the elevator doors to close.

"Clara," Ethan called out, his voice commanding, resonating through the entire penthouse. "Do not get on that elevator."

Clara stopped, turning around with exhausted frustration. "Ethan, please. I can't do this anymore."

"Three minutes, Clara," Ethan said, walking into the center of the grand living room. "Give me three minutes. If you still want to leave after that, I will personally carry your bags down to the street."
