Chapter 9 - The Unraveling

Vanessa stood pinned against the fireplace mantel, her hands clutching her caved-in stomach. The silicone prosthetic had torn internally along the puncture line, the heavy gel slumping down toward her hips like a sagging sack of flour beneath the silk fabric.

She looked down at her ruined stomach, then looked up into the eyes of Nathan Vance.

Nathan’s face had completely emptied of color. The guilt, the self-hatred, the five months of agonizing torment that had brought him to the brink of suicide—all of it evaporated, replaced by a vacuum of pure, unadulterated shock.

Slowly, like a man walking through a waking nightmare, Nathan walked toward her.

"Nathan..." Vanessa whispered, her voice stripped of all charm, all power, all beauty. It was the pathetic, raspy whisper of a cornered thief. "Nathan, listen to me... I loved you. I did it because I loved you. I knew you would never leave her unless—"

Nathan didn't say a word. He reached out and grabbed the neckline of her emerald silk dress. With a single, violent wrench, he ripped the silk down the center seam.

The truth lay bare beneath the fabric.

Glued to her pale, flat torso was a flesh-colored corset of synthetic rubber, its edges peeling with sweat and dried adhesive, a deep puncture hole in the center where the artificial silicone core had ruptured and deflated.

Nathan stared at the synthetic skin. He reached out and touched it. Cold, synthetic polymer.

"You weren't pregnant," Nathan whispered. The words came out not as an accusation, but as a shattered revelation of a man who had been tortured for a crime that never existed. "There was never a baby."

"Nathan, please—"

"You drugged me in Miami," Nathan whispered, his voice rising, vibrating with a fury that shook his entire body. "You drugged me! You staged the bed! You brought fake sonograms into my office! You moved into my home! You made me destroy my wife!"

Nathan let out a guttural, primal roar that rattled the windows. He grabbed the top edge of the silicone prosthetic and pulled.

Vanessa screamed in genuine physical pain as the medical-grade skin adhesive ripped free from her flesh, tearing away chest hair and epidermal layers as the heavy, deflated rubber mass peeled away from her ribs. Nathan tore the prosthetic completely from her body and hurled it onto the marble floor.

The eight-thousand-dollar silicone belly bounced twice, landing at Clara’s feet like a slaughtered rubber animal.

Vanessa fell to her knees on the rug, clutching her reddened, adhesive-burned ribs, sobbing hysterically. "I had debts! They were going to kill me, Nathan! You have millions! You wouldn't have even missed it! You owe me! You ruined my reputation at the firm!"

The front door opened. Two uniformed Chicago police officers stepped into the penthouse, accompanied by Marcus Vance.

"Officers," Ethan said calmly, stepping forward and handing Marcus’s file to the lead officer. "This woman is Vanessa Reed. You have an active warrant for grand larceny, extortion, and the administration of an illicit controlled substance in Dade County, Florida. The evidence, the weapon, and the victim are all in this room."

The officers didn't hesitate. Within sixty seconds, Vanessa’s hands were cuffed behind her back. As they hauled her to her feet, she spewed a torrent of vile, unhinged profanities at Nathan, Clara, and Ethan, her face contorted into a mask of pure demonic rage.

"You're nothing, Nathan!" she shrieked as they dragged her toward the elevator. "You're a pathetic, weak coward who needed an excuse to feel like a man! You'll never get her back! She will hate you until the day you die!"

The elevator doors closed, cutting off her screams.

The penthouse was silent once more.
